According to the latest data released by market research firm Gartner, chip spending by the world's top ten OEMs fell by 7.6% year-on-year in 2022, accounting for 37.2% of the entire market. Apple will remain the world's largest chip buyer in 2022, with a market share of 11.1%.

Judging from the specific ranking of the top ten chip buyers, most of the top ten companies in 2021 will remain unchanged in 2022. Among them, Apple ranks first among semiconductor purchasing customers for the fourth consecutive year. As Apple continues to shift toward owning its own chips, the company reduced spending on computing microprocessing units (MPUs) by 11.7%. However, Apple's spending on non-memory chips increased by 2.8%. Samsung Electronics ranked second, Lenovo ranked third, Dell rose to fourth, and BBK, Xiaomi, and Huawei ranked fifth to seventh respectively.

Gartner senior director analyst Masatsune Yamaji said in a statement that most of the world's top ten semiconductor customers are PC and smartphone OEMs. He said:

As consumer demand for PCs and smartphones plummeted, these OEMs were unable to increase unit production and shipments.

Semiconductor shortages persist in the automotive, networking and industrial electronics markets, raising chip average selling prices (ASPs) and accelerating semiconductor revenue growth in these markets.

As a result, these factors have caused the top OEMs' share of total semiconductor spending to decline in 2022 compared to 2021.

Samsung Electronics increased chip spending by 2.2% and maintained its second position. Semiconductor spending increased in 2022 as the company gained more market share in the smartphone market thanks to its leadership in foldable phones. Although, the company expects the smartphone market to shrink throughout the year, with the mass market being the most affected. Ben Suh, executive vice president of investor relations, said that the business environment deteriorated significantly in the fourth quarter of 2022, and the economic slowdown caused by global shared economic problems led to weak demand. But the company gained more market share in the smartphone market due to its leadership in foldable phones and benefiting from China's epidemic policies that affected its rival Apple, leading to an increase in semiconductor spending in 2022.

As for Sony, sales of its PlayStation 5 video game console are booming and the company will see the fastest growth in chip spending in 2022. However, production was unable to ramp up to meet demand levels due to severe chip shortages and logistics network disruptions that persisted throughout the year.

Memory is the worst-performing equipment category, accounting for approximately 25% of semiconductor sales in 2022, with revenue falling 10% as prices plummeted in the second half of 2022 amid weak demand. The top 10 OEMs accounted for 49.2% of memory spending, thus leading to a significant decline in memory spending.

A total of four companies in mainland China are among the top ten chip purchasers in the world, namely Lenovo, BBK, Xiaomi and Huawei. It is worth noting that among the top ten chip buyers, only Samsung Electronics and Sony are increasing their purchase volume, while other manufacturers are declining. Among them, Huawei's chip purchase volume has the largest decline, reaching 19.4%.

According to preliminary statistics from Gartner, total global semiconductor revenue in 2022 will be US$601.7 billion, an increase of only 1.1% from US$595 billion in 2021.
