Smoke detectors save lives. Three out of five fire deaths in the United States occur in buildings without smoke detectors. Smoke detectors save lives, but only when they work properly. Nearly one in four (23%) deaths in buildings with smoke detectors occurred when the detectors were not working or were disabled due to frequent false alarms.
Smoke detector manufacturers face four serious challenges:
1. Higher performance to reduce the frequency of false alarms that would cause consumers to disable or shut down the device
2. New regulatory requirements (UL217, EN54/14604)
3. Power consumption that requires frequent battery replacement
4. Reduce the size of smoke detectors to make them easier to integrate into buildings and to match aesthetic appeal
New smoke detection solutions, leveraging our deep sensor expertise, we can provide integrated solutions to help manufacturers design better smoke detectors.
The ADPD188BI is a complete photometric system for smoke detection using optical dual-wavelength technology. The module integrates a highly efficient photometric front end, two light emitting diodes (LEDs), and two photodiodes (PDs). These devices are sealed in a custom package that prevents the light from the LEDs from directly striking the photodiodes before entering the smoke detection cavity.
The front end of the application specific integrated circuit (ASIC) consists of a control block, a 14-bit analog-to-digital converter (ADC) with a 20-bit pulse accumulator, and three flexible LED drivers that can be independently controlled. The control circuit includes flexible LED signal routing and synchronous detection functions. The analog front end (AFE) has excellent characteristics for suppressing modulation interference that causes signal deregulation and corruption (usually caused by ambient light). Data output and functional configuration are carried out through a 1.8 V I2C interface or a serial peripheral interface (SPI) port.
