A report recently released by market research firm Counterpoint shows that the epidemic has caused a sharp drop in smartphone sales, with global smartphone application processor (AP) market shipments falling 26% year-on-year in the second quarter of 2020.

Qualcomm continues to lead the market with a market share of 29%, followed closely by MediaTek with a market share of 26%. Compared with the same period last year, the market share of the two companies was 33% and 24% respectively, and the gap has narrowed significantly.
In addition to the competition between MediaTek and Qualcomm, HiSilicon also performed well, becoming the third-ranked mobile processor manufacturer with a market share of 16%. Apple and Samsung tied for fourth place with a market share of 13%. Unisoc ranked fifth.

From the perspective of countries and regions, HiSilicon led the Chinese smartphone AP market in Q2 2020, with a market share of 41%. The report analyzed that after the United States expanded its "blockade" of Huawei, Huawei increased its use of HiSilicon Kirin chips. The report also pointed out that the latest US ban on Huawei took effect on September 15, and Counterpoint is skeptical about HiSilicon's future smartphone AP sales.
Earlier, Huawei Consumer Business CEO Yu Chengdong also stated at the 2020 China Information Technology Hundred People Summit that the new generation of Huawei Mate 40 will be released in September this year, equipped with the most advanced Huawei Kirin 5G chip. However, Huawei Mate 40 will become a "discontinued" machine equipped with high-end Kirin chips, because Kirin series chips will no longer be produced after September.
