Over the past two decades, Micron has established very deep relationships with Chinese customers and has continued to invest in the Chinese market. Recently, Micron's Xi'an factory has been very active.

From November 5 to November 10, 2024, Micron, as an industry leader in memory and storage solutions, once again appeared at the 7th China International Import Expo. At this CIIE, Micron, with the theme of "Deepening the Storage Field and Empowering Digital China", comprehensively displayed a series of industry-leading memory and storage solutions, highlighting its contributions and achievements in the Chinese market.

At this year's CIIE, Micron shared the latest progress of the Xi'an packaging and testing plant expansion project, and shared with relevant partners on the theme of "Talking about Empowerment: Co-promoting Coexistence of Business and Sustainable Development".

Implementing the concept of environmental protection, Xi'an factory won authoritative recognition

Zero carbon and sustainable development are issues that Micron has long adhered to. Micron's Xi'an factory has successfully won two recognitions through its continuous efforts and pursuit of excellence.

The first is the "Zero Carbon Factory (Type I Five-Star)" certificate issued by the China Quality Certification Center CQC.

Wu Mingxia, general manager of Micron Technology China, said that the certificate is an important milestone for Micron to move towards the net zero goal and a great affirmation of Micron's work in zero carbon emission management and carbon emission reduction. She emphasized that climate change is closely related to every company and every person. Micron China is unwavering in achieving carbon emission reduction. In the past period of time, it has deployed a number of carbon emission reduction projects such as environmentally friendly thermal fluids, environmentally friendly refrigerants, heat pumps, digital energy systems, and green electricity trading. In the future, it will continue to explore new technologies and methods to produce and operate in a more efficient and environmentally friendly way.

Yu Jie, director of the China Quality Certification Center, said that Micron has made many efforts to promote energy conservation and emission reduction, and has established greenhouse gas emission reduction targets, including green energy applications, the use of waste heat, waste pressure, and intelligent systems, and carbon offsetting the remaining part.

The second is the “UL 2799 Zero Waste to Landfill Gold Certification” issued by UL Solutions.

Wu Mingxia said that obtaining the UL 2799 Gold Level certification for zero landfill waste is an important recognition of Micron Technology's excellent waste resource management. Due to production activities, humans are demanding resources from the earth, and pollution and resource waste are one of the three major global environmental issues. Resource efficiency issues are closely related to industrial supply chain resilience, circular economy, and carbon emission management. Micron's Xi'an factory carries out refined waste management, and works with upstream and downstream partners to improve resource utilization efficiency, reduce environmental footprint, and save costs through reduction, recycling, and resource utilization.

Shi Jun, general manager of UL Certification in Suzhou, said that sustainability, recyclability and reusability are very important research topics and directions. Micron, as an industry-leading world-class company, has obtained gold-level verification for zero landfill (projects with a waste landfill diversion rate of 95% to 99% or more). In the future, we hope to continue to cooperate with Micron to push social sustainability and circular economy commitments to a higher level, namely platinum-level verification (consistently achieving a 100% waste landfill diversion rate).

Micron and LONGi sign green energy cooperation agreement to build a sustainable development ecosystem

At the meeting, Micron and LONGi Green Energy held a cooperation signing ceremony. The two parties will carry out in-depth cooperation in the field of sustainable development and jointly explore innovative models and solutions.

According to Xie Tian, general manager of LONGi Green Energy Strategic Management Center, LONGi joined the Science-Based Targets Initiative in 2020 and became the first photovoltaic company to pass the Science-Based Targets SBTi certification last year. By the end of 2023, LONGi's silicon wafer shipments will reach 414GW, equivalent to 27% of the global photovoltaic installed capacity. If calculated based on the emission reduction effect brought by the green electricity generated, the cumulative amount will exceed 812 million.

The Hi-MO X6 series products provided to Micron are representative products of LONGi Green Energy, which have the characteristics of anti-hail, anti-wind step, anti-dust accumulation, etc. Recently, LONGi Green Energy launched the second-generation HPBC distributed product Hi-MO X10, which is the component with the highest power generation efficiency per unit area in the world. We look forward to applying these products to buildings to reduce emissions in the future.

Becoming a model in the ESG field, Micron Technology's excellent case study was included

In August this year, the American Chamber of Commerce in China released the Social Impact Report, which included Micron Technology's outstanding cases.

Jonna Ma, Vice President of the American Chamber of Commerce in China, shared her thoughts on the Micron case, pointing out that Micron has effectively implemented sustainable development goals in its daily operations. For example, Micron's Xi'an factory has a waste recycling rate of up to 99.7%, truly achieving zero landfill. In addition, Micron's sustainable development plan action projects cover a wide range, not only involving its own business, but also paying great attention to community building. Jonna Ma added: "Micron's ESG team works very rigorously. In the process of communicating with the Micron team, whether it is data disclosure or proofreading of Chinese and English details, we have conducted multiple rounds of discussions and repeated verifications."

Dai Hongyin, Director of Sustainability at Micron Technology China, shared at the meeting that Micron has carried out sustainable actions in procurement, logistics, warehousing, production and all areas of business. 2024 is the ninth time that Micron has released sustainable development goals. Micron will build its Xi'an factory into its first global center of excellence for sustainable development.

Dai Hongyin further shared a set of data: In terms of greenhouse gas emissions (Scope 1), Micron's Xi'an factory plans to achieve an absolute emission reduction target of 90% in 2025 compared to the base year 2020. As of September 2024, this goal has been achieved by 85%; in terms of energy, it plans to achieve 100% renewable energy electricity in 2025, and as of September 2024, this goal has been achieved; in terms of water, it plans to increase the water resource protection rate to 100% in 2025, and as of September 2024, 50% of this goal has been achieved; in terms of waste, it plans to achieve 100% waste resource utilization and zero landfill in 2025. As of September 2024, 98% of this goal has been achieved.

Partner empowerment, business and sustainable development promote symbiosis

Achieving sustainable development is never a one-man show. At this CIIE, Micron also showcased its ecosystem. In the roundtable discussion on "Talking about Empowerment: Business and Sustainable Development Promote Symbiosis", the American Chamber of Commerce in China and Micron's partners Schneider Electric, LONGi Green Energy, Siasun Robotics, and China Construction First Engineering Bureau Group all expressed their views.

Schneider Electric and Micron's cooperation is on three levels. Xiong Yi, senior vice president of Schneider Electric and head of strategy and business development in China, said that the first level is to ensure the stability of energy and power supply. Schneider Electric and Micron have done a lot of research and innovation to ensure that the enterprise-level microgrid after the access of new energy is safe, stable and reliable; the second level is to improve energy efficiency. Schneider Electric has had long-term cooperation with Longi Green Energy and Micron's global factories in the past to analyze basic energy data and help improve efficiency; the third level is to improve the proportion and efficiency of self-consumption. This cooperation includes building a more coordinated and optimized photovoltaic storage and charging system to achieve microgrid dispatching.

Siasun Robotics and Micron have cooperated extensively in intelligent logistics. Yang Qi, president of Shanghai Siasun Robotics Co., Ltd., introduced that the intelligent warehousing system it provides to Micron has a 30% smaller footprint than traditional solutions and uses an advanced WMS system to continuously optimize operating efficiency during the monitoring process, reducing overall system resource consumption and costs. Since the intelligent warehousing system has many human-machine interactions, it has passed the TüV safety certification to strengthen the safety of equipment and people. More importantly, through the information system, the entire supply chain can be made more transparent, helping Micron.

LONGi Green Energy helped complete the rooftop photovoltaic system of the Xi'an factory. Xie Tian emphasized that as a photovoltaic solution provider for Micron, its own emission reduction and low-carbon products can also help Micron achieve its emission reduction goals. Since last year, LONGi Green Energy has established a board strategy and sustainable development committee and appointed the company's chief sustainable development officer to continuously improve the ESG governance mechanism. At the same time, it has increased its investment in environmental protection by 38% compared with the previous year.
