Apple has released iOS 16 and iPadOS 16 systems, and has released the first developer preview Beta.

Apple is bringing its system-wide translation feature to the Camera app in iOS 16, allowing for real-time translation of signs, packaging, and more using your iPhone.

Using the Translate feature is as simple as opening the Camera app and pointing it at the text you want to translate. Tap the text selection button in the app to select the detected text, then choose the Translate option to get an instant translation.

You can pause the view to get the translation overlaid on the text, and zoom in for a closer look. It's a helpful feature that's great for signs and other wording you may not understand when traveling.

The Google Translate app has long had a similar feature where you can activate the camera in the app and translate any text around you, so this new iOS 16 feature essentially brings the iOS camera app on par with the Google Translate option.

Apple has also added new Quick Actions that work with this camera feature and other Live Text options in iOS. Quick Actions make data detected in photos, videos, and through the Camera app actionable. Flight information, freight, foreign languages, currencies, URLs, and more are tappable so you can track packages, make conversions, visit URLs, and more, all from content in photos and videos.

iOS 16 and iPadOS 16 are scheduled to be released in public beta in July, and developer preview betas are currently available. iOS 16, iPadOS 16, macOS Ventura, and watchOS 9 will all be released publicly this fall.
