Apple Pippin is a game console/multimedia player platform launched by Apple and Bandai in 1995/1996 in markets such as Japan and the United States, but unfortunately it was not favored by the market in the end.
It uses a 66MHz PowerPC 603e processor, a 14.4 kbit/s modem, and runs a stripped-down version of Mac OS. It was originally intended to be a low-cost computer for CD-based multimedia (especially games) and comes with networking capabilities. It uses a 4x optical drive and a video output interface that can be connected to a TV. Its name comes from the Newtown Pippin.
Rumors are circulating that Apple may be returning to the gaming console market, years after the Pippin.
A whistleblower on the Clien forum claimed that news came from the Taiwanese supply chain that Apple was considering returning to the gaming industry. There are rumors that Apple is using external consulting management to conduct feasibility studies.
Currently, we are discussing various methods, such as how to put Apple host devices into or how to turn Apple TV into a game console.
The tipster also said that Apple is also seeking proposals from leading game companies for exclusive work. Currently, Capcom and Ubisoft are both very interested in this.
Clien, the whistleblower, has successfully predicted some product news before. For example, Intel i9-12900KS was launched before it was released, so there is still some credibility.
There are also reports that the company appears to be developing/producing a chip specifically to power a game console. Alternatively, Apple may not be interested in a game console at all, and they may directly integrate their new gaming device into the Apple TV instead of launching a separate standalone device.
IT Home learned that the Apple M1 series chips used by Apple in Mac and iPad have very impressive performance, and the subsequently launched Apple M1 Pro, M1 Max, and Apple M1 Ultra all have performance that is difficult to match by products of the same level. The rumored M2 series is expected to arrive in the second half of the year. It is not ruled out that Apple will create dedicated gaming chips based on the new generation of Apple Silicon.
