On the morning of February 8, Apple acquired AI Music, a startup that uses artificial intelligence to create music. People familiar with the matter revealed that the acquisition was completed in recent weeks.
According to Bloomberg, the technology developed by the company can use artificial intelligence to create royalty-free soundtracks. These tracks are dynamic and can change based on real-time user interactions. For example, a song can have a different tone when the intensity of exercise is higher.
AI Music can even create songs that “adapt to your heartbeat,” as described on the startup’s website, which has now been taken down but can still be viewed via cache.
AI Music mentioned in its official introduction: Through our Infinite Music Engine and other proprietary technologies, we provide customized solutions for marketers, publishers, fitness professionals, creative agencies, etc. Music can adapt to your heartbeat, and audio ads match the background of the listener.
As usual, Apple declined to comment on the acquisition, so it’s unknown how much it paid for the startup, or how it plans to integrate its technology into Apple products. Apple appears to have been making major improvements to Apple Music this year, as the company also acquired classical music service Primephonic in August 2021.
It's not hard to imagine what Apple could do with AI Music's technology, such as automatically matching music for users of its fitness service Apple Fitness+, or having HomePod emit different background sounds in real time based on the weather or room temperature.
Perhaps there will be relevant technical demonstrations at the WWDC 2022 Developer Conference.
