At 1:00 a.m. Beijing time on September 16, Apple's 2020 Fall New Product Launch Conference was held online. At this conference, Apple launched smart hardware products mainly including new smart watches and tablets, but the new mobile phones that the industry expected were not released. In this regard, Tong Zixian, chairman of Apple's foundry Pegatron, said: "New products also have a 2-3 week gap in previous years, which is normal and there is no need to worry too much."
From the perspective of new smart watches and tablets, they mainly include Apple Watch Series 6, Apple Watch SE, iPad Air 4, iPad 8 and other products. Among them, the biggest highlight of Apple Watch Series 6 is that it is equipped with a new blood oxygen monitoring sensor, which can complete a blood oxygen content measurement within 15 seconds; Apple Watch Series 6 also uses the S6 processor, which is built based on the A13 architecture chip of iPhone 11, and its performance is 20% higher than the previous generation.
The Apple Watch SE uses the S5 chip and is available in both GPS and cellular versions. It has the same accelerometer, gyroscope, and altimeter as the Series 6, and supports fall detection, but lacks the electrocardiogram (ECG) function.
The iPad 8 is equipped with the A12 Bionic chip, which has a 40% improvement in CPU performance and twice the graphics processing capability compared to the previous generation. It is 2 times faster than the best-selling Windows laptop, 3 times faster than the best-selling Android tablet, and 6 times faster than the best-selling Chromebook. The iPad 8 is equipped with a neural network engine that can achieve up to 5 trillion operations per second and supports a full-size keyboard.
On September 16, Jiwei.com compiled a list of some A-share suppliers currently supplying Apple's new products.
Let’s start with OEM. In the past two months, Apple’s new OEM factories have been a hot topic in the industry, and Lens Technology and Luxshare Precision are the hot candidates for Apple’s new OEM factories in China. In the end, Lens Technology spent a lot of money to acquire Taiwan’s Catcher, and Luxshare Precision’s production of TWS headphones for Apple this year has also increased significantly, and it has also acquired two subsidiaries of Wistron.
As for the Apple Watch and iPad released this time, the former is assembled by Luxshare Precision, while the latter is assembled by the newly entered BYD. Influenced by this positive news, BYD's stock price has risen sharply in recent trading days, and has also driven the stock prices of its related core suppliers. According to a research report previously released by Tianfeng International analyst Ming-Chi Kuo, BYD Electronics is expected to replace Quanta this year and become the exclusive assembly supplier of iPod Touch, and obtain at least 10% to 20% of iPad assembly orders.
If BYD Electronics can successfully ship iPads in 2020, it is expected to receive more Wi-Fi version iPad assembly orders in 2021. The Wi-Fi version of the iPad accounts for about 60–70% of the total iPad shipments, so BYD Electronics still has a lot of room for growth in iPad assembly.
Luxshare Precision is deeply tied to Apple, from supplying parts and components in the beginning to assembling TWS earphones for Apple. The Apple Watch released this time is exclusively assembled and manufactured by Luxshare Precision, while it was previously mainly manufactured by Quanta, which is not common in Apple's supply chain!
In addition, USI provides SiP for Apple Watch, Changxin Technology provides display touch for Apple Watch, Lens Technology provides sapphire, Everwin Precision provides iPad external keyboards and Watch structural parts, and Sunway Communication provides antennas for Apple Watch and iPad.
In addition, TSMC provides foundry services for its 5nm A14 chip, LeLea provides materials for Apple Watch straps, RIP provides timing control chips, GIS and TPK provide touch modules, etc.
Overall, judging from Apple's previous autumn conferences, this year's conference without new smartphones is obviously not satisfactory. In the case of Huawei's mobile phone "chip shortage", Apple's most popular new smartphone to be released is expected to benefit, which may stimulate the performance improvement of its related suppliers!
