New dual-band SoC extends connectivity coverage for Amazon Sidewalk, Wi-SUN and proprietary long-range wireless protocols
The first sub-Ghz SoC with built-in AI/ML accelerator brings intelligence to edge applications
Beijing, China - June 12, 2023 – Silicon Labs (also known as "Silicon Technology"), a global leader committed to building a more connected world with secure and intelligent wireless connection technology, today launched the new dual-band FG28 system-on-chip ( SoC), this product is designed for long-distance wide coverage networks and protocols such as Amazon Sidewalk, Wi-SUN and other proprietary protocols. As a dual-band SoC that includes sub-Ghz and 2.4 Ghz Bluetooth LE radios, FG28 has a built-in artificial intelligence/machine learning (AI/ML) accelerator for machine learning inference and has the industry-leading Leading Secure Vault™ security technology.
"The FG28 SoC meets multiple key needs of our customers when developing and deploying low-power wide-area networks," said Daniel Cooley, chief technology officer at Silicon Core. "
Dual-band capability enables support for multiple protocols in a single design
As connectivity and computing power are pushed further into edge devices, emerging applications will require solutions that offer a "Swiss Army Knife" of comprehensive connectivity options. By using networks such as Wi-SUN to provide sub-Ghz connectivity, the FG28 can serve as a battery-powered end node in smart cities. For example as a tracker on a bin to help locate the bin and check when it was last emptied, or in an irrigation system on a commercial farm covering several acres, or as a livestock tracker and health monitor on a vast pasture . Bluetooth connectivity not only allows devices to be easily deployed on the network, but also allows operators to connect to the device locally for diagnostics, data downloads, and more. The FG28 SoC has several additional features that can open new applications for sub-Ghz devices:
• The industry's first sub-Ghz SoC with integrated AI/ML hardware accelerator, supporting machine learning inference on edge devices to enable predictive maintenance warnings and monitoring of key soil conditions such as humidity and pH.
• 1024 kB of flash memory and 256 kB of RAM to meet the memory requirements of various protocol stacks and technology stacks.
• Industry-leading Secure Vault mid- and advanced-level support to better establish trust in devices and enable designers to choose the desired level of security for their applications.
• Energy-efficient RF core with low active and sleep currents, and fast wake-up times, making them ideal for battery-powered end nodes.
• Up to 49 general-purpose input/output (GPIO) pins for powerful peripheral connectivity.
Support for Amazon Sidewalk pushes connectivity beyond the smart home
One of the most exciting developments in the Internet of Things (IoT) space over the past year has been the opening of Amazon Sidewalk to developers. Amazon Sidewalk is a secure, ubiquitous, always-on community network built by the community, for the community. Amazon Sidewalk uses existing smart home devices such as selected cameras and speakers as gateways to provide secure, reliable, and versatile connections to support long-distance application scenarios.
Developers and designers who are interested in using Xinke Technology products to develop applications for Amazon Sidewalk can watch the on-demand replay of the Tech Talk technology lecture "Using Amazon Sidewalk to Design Devices with Longer Range" held on June 8.

FG28 samples are currently available and are planned to be fully launched before the end of the third quarter of 2023. Additionally, the FG28 will be available in derivatives optimized for Amazon Sidewalk and Z-Wave Long-Range, and as a standalone microcontroller (MCU). Developers and designers can contact a Semiconductor sales representative for more information.
In order to keep up with the latest IoT trends and learn about the latest tools, protocols, etc., developers and designers can also register to attend Tech Talks, a wireless training course held by Core Technology. These conference topics focus on Wi-Fi, Bluetooth, Matter and LPWAN. You can watch live and on-demand online for free.
