IT Home reported on April 24 that according to The Verge, Apple may be cracking down on apps that are not updated. In an email sent to affected developers, Apple warned that it would remove apps that "have not been updated for a long time" from the App Store and give developers 30 days to update them.
“You can make your app discoverable and downloadable from the App Store by submitting an update for review within 30 days,” Apple wrote in an email. “If an update is not submitted within 30 days, the app will be removed from the App Store.”
Many app developers, such as Robert Kabwe of Protopop Games, have expressed their concerns about the change. Kabwe said on Twitter that Apple threatened to remove his game, Motivoto, because it had not been updated since March 2019.
In addition, FlickType Apple Watch keyboard developer Kosta Eleftheriou, game developer Emilia Lazer-Walker and others have received emails from Apple.
On the App Store Improvements page, Apple said: "We are implementing an ongoing app evaluation process to remove apps that no longer function as intended, do not follow current review guidelines, or are outdated."
IT Home learned that earlier this month, Google Play Store also announced that it would begin to limit the visibility of apps that "do not target API levels within two years of the latest Android release." Android developers must update their apps by November 1, 2022, but if they can't meet the deadline, they can also choose to apply for a six-month extension.
