Apple has been hit with its ninth €5 million fine in the Netherlands as it continues to fail to meet new requirements for alternative payment systems for dating apps, Reuters reports.
The Netherlands Authority for Consumers and Markets (ACM) said Apple submitted "new proposals" to it on Monday in an attempt to resolve the company's dispute in the Netherlands over allowing dating app developers to use third-party payment methods. The ACM did not disclose any details of Apple's newly proposed remedies, which it said it would now evaluate, and the organization continued to impose a 5 million euro fine on Apple for the ninth week.
Apple has now been fined a total of €45 million. The regulator can only fine Apple once more, as the maximum total fine would then reach €50 million.
Apple said in mid-January that it would comply with the ACM's ruling to allow dating apps to use alternative payment systems, but the company's terms included only reducing its commission on such purchases to 27% from the standard 30%, requiring developers to maintain separate app binaries, and requiring developers to submit monthly sales records to Apple through alternative means so that commissions can be tracked.
The ACM said Apple has "put up several obstacles" for dating apps that want to offer alternative payment systems in the Netherlands and forced dating apps to choose between the App Store's standard in-app purchase system or alternative payment systems. The regulator said dating apps must be able to offer both options in the Netherlands.
