According to 9to5 Mac, Apple has no indication that it is developing a new version of the Pro Display XDR. However, there are rumors that Apple has a new external display in development. People familiar with the matter revealed that Apple has been developing a new "Apple Studio Display" with a higher resolution than the Pro Display XDR.
Apple released the Pro Display XDR in December 2019 for $4,999 with an optional $999 stand. The 32-inch display has a 6K resolution, a peak brightness of 1,600 nits, is suitable for HDR content, 10-bit, 1.073 billion colors, and a contrast ratio of 1,000,000:1.
While it’s unclear whether the new Apple Studio Display is a replacement for the Pro Display XDR or a new option in the product line with unique features, people familiar with the matter say the new monitor has a 7K resolution.
In comparison, the Pro Display XDR has a 32-inch 6K (6016 x 3384) panel with a pixel density of 218 PPI. The higher resolution could mean the new Apple Studio Display will have a higher pixel density of 245 PPI, or it could keep the same 218 PPI as the Pro Display XDR, but with a larger 36-inch panel size.
In July 2021, it was reported that Apple has been testing a new external display with model number "J327" and a built-in A13 chip. According to the source, the Apple Studio Display is also the J327 model - which means that Apple is still developing an external display with a dedicated Apple Silicon chip.
Bloomberg's Mark Gurman recently reported that Apple plans to launch multiple new Macs in 2022, along with a new external display that's half the price of the Pro Display XDR for regular users. In the past, Apple's "Cinema Display" series has been available in a variety of sizes — so it wouldn't be surprising if Apple once again offered customers two or more display options.
The launch schedule for the new Apple Studio Display is unclear, but Apple will hold a special event on March 8 where it is rumored to launch new Mac devices.
