According to the Nikkei report, Intel CEO Pat Gelsinger said yesterday that the company's chip foundry business currently has "more than 50 potential customers."

In March this year, Intel announced its IDM 2.0 plan and announced that it would open up its foundry business. In addition to planning to supply automobile and parts suppliers facing semiconductor shortages, the company has also begun business negotiations with cloud computing companies. The existing factory will start foundry production in 2021, and the two new factories built in Arizona, USA with an investment of US$20 billion will be fully operational from 2024.

Since the end of last year, the global industry has been facing a chip shortage, and wafer fab capacity has remained fully loaded. In addition, the US government is committed to strengthening domestic chip production and further promoting wafer fab investment and expansion plans.

Intel released its first quarter financial report for fiscal year 2021 ending March 27, showing that according to US Generally Accepted Accounting Principles (GAAP), the revenue for the first quarter was $19.7 billion, down 1% from $19.8 billion in the same period last year; net profit was $3.4 billion, down 41% from $5.7 billion in the same period last year. Intel said on the same day that it expects full-year sales in 2021 to decrease by 1% year-on-year to $77 billion, the first revenue decline in six years.

Therefore, the company intends to keep pace with the US government and take advantage of the opportunity of "manufacturing returning to the country" to achieve further growth. However, the industry has different opinions on the return of manufacturing to the country. Nvidia CEO Huang Renxun once said that the global supply chain is closely connected and cannot be separated. Manufacturing chips requires cooperation between multiple regions and multiple companies.

The Semiconductor Industry Association (SIA) estimates that the United States will need an initial investment of $350 billion to $420 billion to achieve semiconductor self-sufficiency, and an annual budget of $5 billion to $15 billion.

In order to revitalize the domestic semiconductor manufacturing industry, the US government will provide up to $50 billion in funding for the chip industry, which is also part of the $2.3 trillion infrastructure plan. However, given that the semiconductor industry chain is the most globalized industry chain, whether the United States can achieve its goals remains to be seen.

What are the differences between ARM, Intel, and MIPS processors?
Android supports three types of processors (CPUs): ARM, Intel, and MIPS. ARM is undoubtedly the most widely used. Intel is well known for its popularity in desktops and servers, but has relatively little influence in the mobile industry.
