According to juve patent, the UK High Court recently ruled that the 4G LTE patents owned by PanOptis and its parent company Unwired Planet are valid, and Apple lost the case. However, since Apple will accept the license determined by the court, no injunction was issued.
It is reported that PanOptis had previously accused Apple of intentionally infringing seven patents covering its 4G LTE capabilities and listed the iPhone, iPad and Apple Watch as infringing devices.
However, among the above-mentioned seven patents, patent EP1230818 involves "a method for improving switching between mobile communication systems". The patent was submitted on October 20, 2000. In view of the provision in the Patent Law that "the validity period of a patent is 20 years", the patent has expired.
In addition to the UK, PanOptis and its affiliates also filed similar lawsuits against Apple in the United States. In August this year, a federal jury in Texas ruled that Apple had infringed its rights and was required to pay $506.2 million in compensation.
Apple said in a previous statement: "Lawsuits like these, brought by companies that accumulate patents solely to harass an industry, stifle innovation and harm consumers."
