India lags far behind China. When it comes to Apple's online store, it is almost 10 years behind.
Apple announced today that it will launch an online store in India on September 23, providing Apple's various products and support directly to Indian customers for the first time, nearly 10 years later than in China.
In other words, from September 23, Indian consumers will be able to visit Apple's official website and buy products directly from Apple, just like other consumers around the world shop at Apple's online stores in various countries. So far, Apple's product sales in India are entirely carried out through authorized dealers and e-commerce companies such as Amazon and Walmart's Flipkart.
On October 26, 2010, Apple launched the Apple Store online store in China, providing the easiest way for Chinese consumers to purchase Apple products such as iPhone 4 and iPad. At that time, Tim Cook, then Apple COO, said: "With personalized laser engraving services, customized products and free shipping for all products, the Apple Store online store has become an excellent shopping place for Chinese customers."
Previously, one of the main obstacles that prevented Apple from launching an online store in India was the Indian government's requirement that foreign companies must purchase 30% of their components locally. Eventually, India relaxed this requirement, paving the way for Apple to launch an online store.
