PlayStation CEO Jim Ryan has confirmed that the PlayStation 5 will not be backwards compatible with PlayStation 3, PlayStation 2, and PlayStation 1 games.
After months of rumors and speculation, PlayStation executives have confirmed to Famitsu that the upcoming next-generation console will only be compatible with PlayStation 4 games.
Jim Ryan said: "PS4 already has 100 million players. We think that PS4 games should also be compatible with PlayStation 5, so we included compatibility with PS4. While achieving this goal, we also focused on developing a high-speed solid-state drive and a new controller DualSense at the same time. Therefore, unfortunately, we cannot achieve this (further downward) compatibility."
As of now, it is unclear how PlayStation 5 backward compatibility will work with PlayStation 4 games. Yesterday, Sony announced a PlayStation Plus Collection service, a new service that will allow PlayStation 5 users to access several classic PlayStation 4 games such as Uncharted 4, God of War, Bloodborne, Batman: Arkham Knight, and more.
Jim Ryan also said that PS5 is compatible with 99% of PS4 games.
