Qualcomm and Quectel demonstrate Wi-Fi and 5G cellular link aggregation at MWC Las Vegas
— Demonstration Shows Successful Integration of Data Rate Enhancement Features in Networked PC/Laptop —
September 29, 2022, Las Vegas – Qualcomm Technologies, Inc., a subsidiary of Qualcomm Incorporated, and Quectel Communications Co., Ltd., a leading global provider of IoT solutions, demonstrated the PC/laptop industry’s first 5G cellular module that supports Wi-Fi and 5G cellular link aggregation at Quectel’s booth [Booth No.: W1.520] at MWC Las Vegas 2022. This feature can significantly increase data transmission rates in scenarios with weak Wi-Fi connections.
Wi-Fi and 5G cellular link aggregation can supplement weak Wi-Fi connections with cellular data as needed to significantly increase high-speed data rates while keeping cellular data usage to a minimum. This intelligent, adaptive feature can significantly improve the user's Internet experience in scenarios with weak Wi-Fi connections, including when the Wi-Fi signal is weak or overloaded, while keeping cellular data usage to a minimum, thereby reducing the impact of data usage on user charges.
The demonstration used Quectel's 5G cellular modules RM502Q-AE and RM520N-GL, which are powered by the Snapdragon® X65/X62/X55 5G modem-RF system, and provided connectivity support for commercial laptops through applications developed by the engineering teams of both parties.
For many years, Qualcomm Technologies has been managing a Technology Value Added Services (Tech VAS) program , which is supported by Qualcomm through its Qualcomm Technology Licensing (QTL) division to promote the development of the mobile ecosystem and help the industry develop and deploy the most advanced and often complex technologies to complement its world-leading inventions. As part of the Tech VAS program, cellular link aggregation has been commercialized in some smartphones, but this collaboration with Quectel Communications is the first time that this technology has been introduced to the PC/laptop market.
“We are pleased to see the results of our collaboration with Quectel . The service provided by the Tech VAS team is just one of many examples that demonstrates Qualcomm’s continued leadership in advanced technology development and empowering partners through technical collaboration to promote the healthy development of the ecosystem,” said An Chen, vice president of engineering at Qualcomm. “When partners such as Quectel successfully bring devices using Qualcomm’s foundational R&D technologies to market, we believe everyone will benefit. This collaboration is another example of how we can leverage Qualcomm’s technical expertise and leadership to support our customers in differentiating, expanding their global business and achieving success.”
“We are very proud of the successful demonstration at MWC Las Vegas and are pleased to have successfully collaborated with Qualcomm Technologies,” said Neset Yalcinkaya, vice president of product planning at Quectel . “Quectel was founded in 2010 to pursue the dream of ‘making the planet smarter.’ Our mission is to connect devices and people with networks and services, drive digital innovation and help build a smarter world. Our products help make life more convenient, efficient, comfortable, affluent and secure.”
