According to Yonhap News Agency, sources familiar with the matter said that the ninth round of wage negotiations between Samsung Electronics and its largest labor union, the National Samsung Electronics Union (NSEU), ended in failure again on Tuesday. This was the first face-to-face negotiation between the two sides since the union went on a general strike on July 8.

It is reported that the negotiations were attended by Son Woo-mok, the president of the labor union, and Kim Hung-ro, vice president of Samsung Electronics. Although the negotiations lasted for nearly 8 hours, no significant progress was made, and the two sides still had major differences on key issues such as wage increases and labor union rights.

Samsung proposed a 5.1% wage increase and stressed the establishment of a mutually beneficial labor-capital relationship. The union demanded a 5.6% increase in the basic salary of all members, a day off on the union's anniversary, an improvement in the bonus system, and compensation for the economic losses caused by the strike.

Although the strike has lasted for more than two weeks, Samsung Electronics, the world's largest memory chip maker, said the strike had minimal impact on production. However, the prolonged strike has raised concerns that the competitiveness of South Korea's key semiconductor industry may decline.

It is reported that NSEU has a total of 31,000 members, accounting for about 24% of Samsung Electronics' 125,000 employees.
