Should OPC abandon the pit? [Copy link]

OPC stands for Object Linking and Embedding (OLE) for Process Control. It is a communication program developed by Microsoft for Windows-based applications and field process control applications. Currently, this technology is only well supported by Windows. However, Microsoft does not support it well in its new operating system, such as the Windows IoT system. However, the development of this system is very troublesome and not flexible enough (mainly because it is not easy to leave the Windows system). Many field devices do not support direct access to the OPC server. Most of them are accessed through the middle layer. Therefore, the development workload of some DCS manufacturers or configuration application manufacturers is relatively large. Often, the technology of these manufacturers is relatively weak. Therefore, most manufacturers use the ModBUS method. Although they say they support it, it is just talk. If you support OPC, they will find you a lot of trouble. The purpose is that you'd better not do it! The cost is too high.

So I am quite anxious when doing the project. Should I support it or give up? Support: It is not necessary and the cost is high. Give up: Everyone supports you. If you don’t, will there be trouble in bidding? Thank you. Can you give me some advice?

Are you doing OPC development? If you are doing industrial control, there is no problem using OPC. After all, the IT development of industrial control is not that fast, and many old technologies are still in use.   Details Published on 2020-3-16 14:32

Microsoft doesn't want to play with COM/DCOM technology anymore, mainly because it is only partially supported by companies like Siemens. These big companies are all developing their own private protocols. In the end, no one cares about anyone else. So it's very confusing!
