Beijing time, August 11 morning news, a US judge rejected Intel's request to revoke a jury verdict that required Intel to pay VLSI Technology $2.18 billion in patent infringement damages.
U.S. District Judge Alan Albright in Waco, Texas, issued a sealed order late Monday denying Intel's motion for a new trial.
On March 2, a jury ruled that Intel had infringed two VLSI Technology patents, awarding it $1.5 billion and $675 million in damages. The two patents were once owned by Dutch chipmaker NXP Semiconductors NV.
Intel did not respond to a request for comment on Tuesday.
In seeking a new trial, Intel said the verdict was tainted by faulty jury instructions and evidentiary rulings and appeared to be based on earlier settlements Intel reached that VLSI Technology's own damages experts acknowledged were not comparable.
Intel also said it was the second-largest jury verdict in a patent case, while the other three largest verdicts had been reversed.
On April 21, another jury in Waco ruled in favor of Intel in a separate patent infringement lawsuit, in which VLSI Technology sought $3.1 billion in damages.
