u-blox IoT solution enables secure communication with AWS cloud
Recently, u-blox (SIX:UBXN), a global leading supplier of positioning and wireless communication technologies and services, announced the launch of NORA-W2 AWS IoT ExpressLink Wi-Fi module and SARA-R5 AWS IoT ExpressLink cellular communication module for Internet of Things (IoT) communication to help equipment and fleet management to achieve out-of-the-box Amazon Web Services (AWS) cloud services . The AWS IoT ExpressLink module will significantly speed up design and time to market.
Connecting devices to the cloud remains challenging for many companies. Many solutions currently available on the market require the installation and maintenance of dedicated software to manage device communications. In addition, many traditional devices are too resource-constrained to accommodate the additional code required to enable cloud communications. To address these challenges, EDN, Inc. selected u-blox as an ecosystem partner.
“We were looking for a fast and efficient way to implement robust cloud capabilities for our indoor growing platform. We knew from experience that doing so would add significant risk in terms of time, money, and overall go-to-market execution,” said Ryan Woltz, CEO of EDN, Inc. “Communication technology for IoT devices is complex, so our team had to outsource development to expensive third parties or bring engineering resources in-house, both of which could delay innovative features and time to market. With u-blox’s NORA-W2 and SARA-R5 AWS IoT ExpressLink modules, we were able to go from prototyping to production in just a few days and establish scalable, secure, and reliable cloud communications. The u-blox platform is now a strategic advantage for us , allowing us to focus on product innovation that makes it easy for people to enjoy the beauty of nature indoors.”
u-blox AWS IoT ExpressLink modules are dedicated to optimizing speed and simplicity, paving the way for rapid design without the need to run and maintain complex software on the device side, and are ideal for small and medium-sized companies targeting consumer and industrial markets.
u-blox AWS IoT ExpressLink modules have a simplified and highly abstracted command set that allows for easy configuration without the need for IoT product development, networking and encryption expertise. They are pre-configured to communicate with AWS IoT Core and only require running a few commands to securely connect to AWS out of the box and integrate with services in the AWS ecosystem.
Supports Wi-Fi and cellular communications
These two u-blox modules fill the market gap for Wi-Fi and cellular AWS IoT ExpressLink modules.
The NORA-W2 AWS ExpressLink module is a new module from u-blox that supports Wi-Fi 4 communication and Bluetooth 5 low-power communication (including Bluetooth long-range communication) . It has a compact structure (10.4x14.3 mm) and is equipped with a powerful dual-core central processing unit (CPU). It is equipped with antenna pins or printed circuit board (PCB) antennas for high-end applications.
The SARA-R510 AWS IoT ExpressLink module is a variant of the SARA-R510S LTE-M and NB-IoT module. The Low Power Wide Area (LPWA) module is power optimized, consuming less than 1μA in Power Saving Mode (PSM) to obtain certification for multi-region use, making it ideal for battery-powered applications.
Providing convenience for enterprises in the emerging IoT field
“With the NORA-W2 and SARA-R5 IoT ExpressLink modules, wireless devices can quickly connect to the cloud,” said Andreas Thiel, Executive Director Product Center and co-founder at u-blox. “ AWS IoT ExpressLink simplifies access to cloud services, removing the complexity that hurdles emerging IoT companies face.”
Shyam Krishnamoorthy, General Manager, Consumer IoT and Communications at AWS, said: “Partnering with u-blox was a smart decision for AWS as we knew their high-quality modules for industrial and professional applications would complement our wide range of IoT-related software and cloud services. Covering both Wi-Fi and LTE-M, the NORA-W2 and SARA-R5 modules address critical IoT communications needs and help customers reduce time to market.”
First samples of u-blox AWS IoT ExpressLink modules and EVKs will be available in Q1 2022 .
