Analog Devices has introduced an embedded system for generating engine sounds for electric (EV) and hybrid electric vehicles (HEV). Using the ADSP-BF706 digital signal processor and Electric Vehicle Warning Sound System (EVWSS) firmware, automakers in North America and other parts of the world can meet future safety regulations for external engine sounds when electric and hybrid vehicles are driving at low speeds.
The ADI solution includes a complete hardware and firmware reference design. It can be used for high-performance applications or entry-level applications, respectively, after expansion with the ADSP-BF706 or ADAU1450 digital audio processor. The ADSP-BF706 can also be used to create engine sounds in the cabin, helping to improve the driving experience of car owners. The ADSP-BF706 uses memory-mapped quad-channel SPI memory, which enables faster and easier access to stored audio files used to generate engine sounds. It can access up to 24 WAV files simultaneously, while traditional products can generally only access five.
By using ADI's Sigma Studio integrated development environment (IDE), OEMs can flexibly adjust the sound when using the ADAU1450. This allows even sound engineers with minimal programming experience to optimize audio performance while reducing development time. Later this year, ADI will launch a new version of Sigma Studio that supports the ADSP-BF706. In addition, a low-cost CAN software protocol stack will run on the ADSP-BF706 to help customers quickly implement automotive-grade prototyping.
