Murata Manufacturing Co., Ltd. has developed a high-performance 6-axis inertial force sensor for automobiles, the " SCH1633 -D01 " , which can be used for vehicle position estimation, vehicle posture measurement, and headlight leveling . Murata has already started providing samples and plans to start mass production in the first half of 2025. In the future, Murata also plans to expand the product lineup of the next-generation 6-axis product SCH1000 series, including this product.

In recent years, the automotive industry has continuously introduced AD (autonomous driving)/ADAS (advanced driver assistance system) and other technologies to make driving safer and more comfortable, which also requires the use of GNSS for more accurate self-position estimation. GNSS ( Global Navigation Satellite System ) is a global positioning satellite system that accurately determines the position of an object on the earth by communicating with artificial satellites orbiting above the earth.

In order to achieve more advanced AD/ADAS, the time misalignment problem between the information of GNSS, inertial sensors, cameras/LiDAR/millimeter wave radar needs to be solved, so the inertial sensor also needs to have a time synchronization function. LiDAR ( Light Detection and Ranging ) is a system that detects obstacles around the vehicle by emitting lasers.

In addition, the headlamp leveling regulations formulated by UNECE ( United Nations Economic Commission for Europe ) ( i.e., the mandatory automatic leveling devices in Europe ) are scheduled to be implemented in 2027 ( information as of November 10, 2024 ), and automakers need to add high-precision sensors to vehicles to meet regulatory requirements, which will also increase manufacturing costs.

Therefore, the automotive industry urgently needs a high-precision sensor that can be used for multiple purposes such as AD/ADAS, vehicle posture measurement and headlight adjustment to optimize the overall cost of the vehicle.

Murata has developed the "SCH1633-D01" through the 3D MEMS and system design technology accumulated over the years, which is a high-precision 6-axis inertial sensor for automobiles with time synchronization function. Murata's electrostatic capacitive 3D MEMS (3D micro-electromechanical system) achieves excellent sensor accuracy, small unit size and low power consumption by making silicon materials into 3D structural models. The new product launched this time can provide the inertial signals required for self-position estimation after combining with GNSS, vehicle posture measurement, tilt detection of cameras/lidar/radar, etc. It can provide high-quality signals for these functions and help optimize the overall cost of the vehicle.

In addition, by combining this product with an algorithm, it will help comply with UNECE's headlamp leveling regulations. In road test experiments conducted in California, the United States, more than 90% of autonomous driving mileage was driven using Murata's existing 6DoF MEMS sensor SCHA600 series . The new product was developed based on customer feedback from these road test experiments. Murata's 6DoF series is used to simultaneously measure the six degrees of freedom (DoF) of an object's movement in 3D space .
