Qorvo, Inc. (NASDAQ: QRVO), a leading provider of innovative RF solutions that connect the world, announced that Murata has introduced a small ultra-wideband (UWB) module using Qorvo ICs that measures just 10.5 mm x 8.3 mm x 1.44 mm. The module’s high accuracy, high reliability and low power consumption ensure that compact, battery-powered IoT devices operate as efficiently and cost-effectively as possible. The Type 2AB UWB + Bluetooth low-energy (BLE) connectivity module uses short-range radio frequency (RF) technology for a variety of applications where accurate detection is essential, including ensuring social distancing in the workplace to minimize the spread of COVID-19.
Compared with the chip-on-board design, the UWB module integrating Qorvo IC can reduce the mounting area by about 75%. The resin molded surface mount module with built-in Nordic MCU can also improve design flexibility and shorten product development time (for example: no need to prepare external MCU for customers). Other features include excellent storage unit (256 kB RAM and 1 Mb flash memory), 3-axis motion detection sensor and 250 nA deep sleep mode, and can operate at -40℃-85℃ temperature and 2.5 V-3.6 V voltage conditions.
“The UWB market is expected to grow by approximately 30% in the next few years, driven by the booming sectors such as smartphones, IoT and smart cities,” said Toshifumi Oida, Senior Director of Murata’s Communication Module Division. “Our highly reliable, ultra-compact Type 2AB module with excellent EMI performance is a great solution for product developers who want to apply our groundbreaking high-density surface-mount technology based on RF design to this market.”
"Qorvo is leveraging our ultra-wideband expertise to enable high-performance solutions," said Paul Costigan, senior president of Qorvo UWB IoT Solutions. "We can deliver breakthrough technology and manufacturing scale for integrated modules, like this one from Murata, a world-leading electronic component manufacturer, to accelerate the deployment of UWB and unleash a new wave of innovation. Companies will be able to easily add enhanced location and proximity sensing capabilities to drive business optimization, improve workflow efficiency and increase security in applications such as smartphones, automotive, consumer and industrial IoT."
“We are very pleased to collaborate with Murata on this new UWB module, which combines Murata’s strengths in highly integrated SiP module packaging with Qorvo and Nordic Semiconductor’s long-standing collaboration on UWB and Bluetooth low energy solutions,” said Bjrnge Brandal, Vice President of Sales and Marketing for Asia Pacific at Nordic Semiconductor. “This compact module takes advantage of the high level of integration and computational power of the Nordic nRF52840 system-on-chip, so customers only need a few external components to implement wirelessly connected UWB ranging products, ensuring a small footprint and low power consumption.”
