New Products | Equipped with Renesas GreenPAK™, Murata releases new Picoleaf™ evaluation board to accelerate product application development
Murata Manufacturing Co., Ltd. has developed an evaluation board "EVK-v2" for Murata's piezoelectric film sensor Picoleaf™ . Compared with previous evaluation boards, this evaluation board makes it easier to implement Picoleaf verification functions by adding Renesas Electronics' programmable mixed-signal integrated circuit IC GreenPAK™ and an intuitive GUI (Graphical User Interface), allowing users to intuitively issue commands to the computer through a mouse or touch panel, etc., to help efficient product development. This evaluation board will be available from October 2024.
Murata's piezoelectric film sensor Picoleaf is a thin sensor with a thickness of less than 0.2mm, which can detect pressure, vital signs and motion with high sensitivity. The output analog signal amplification of the old evaluation board is fixed, and the source code needs to be rewritten when changing the on/off judgment threshold. Therefore, if the customer needs to adjust the sensitivity, it will complicate the functional verification process.
In view of this, Murata has developed this evaluation board, which can change the amplification of the analog signal output by the picoleaf sensor and convert it into a digital signal that can be recognized by the microprocessor. By adopting Renesas' GreenPAK IC, this evaluation board can connect 4ch sensors at the same time. And by adding GUI functions, it is possible to dynamically switch the amplification, change the threshold value of the on/off judgment output, and display the output analog signal. This evaluation board makes it easier to evaluate Picoleaf and contributes to efficient product development.

Main Features
The new sensor has a thickness of 0.2mm or less, which can save space even when used in combination with a display or touch screen; the flexible structure can be attached along the curved surface even on highly designed devices with curved surfaces. In addition, it can be used for special shapes such as wrapping around a cylinder; in addition, it can be used in places where water is used (such as bathrooms, kitchens, etc.) or underwater to detect pressure, and used in water-using devices such as washing machines; picoleaf can also be used on metal casings to create seamless buttons.
Features and usage scenarios
The sensor has high sensitivity and can detect tiny displacements on the order of 1µm. A single sensor can detect pressure across the entire surface of a display. In addition, it can be used to detect biosignals such as unconscious muscle tremors, gripping, and pulse.
This type of sensor is non-pyroelectric and has the property of not being polarized by temperature changes. There is no drift caused by heat generated by body temperature, sunlight or semiconductors, so the noise generated by heat can be suppressed. In addition, the power consumption of the sensor itself is 0, and the drive amplifier circuit can also be designed to have a low current consumption (about 10uA). Moreover, Picoleaf™ is an environmentally friendly material, using environmentally friendly organic piezoelectric film made of polylactic acid extracted from plants. It is a carbon-neutral material that does not increase CO2 in the atmosphere during its life cycle of manufacturing, disposal and decomposition, and helps achieve SDGs. In addition, it is a lead-free product that complies with the European RoHS Directive.
