Taking root in China, Renesas Electronics continues to focus on autonomous driving and new energy vehicles

On March 14, 2018, Renesas Electronics, a leading company in the global electronics field, held a press conference at the Munich Shanghai Electronics Show. Mr. Tomomitsu Mooka, Chairman of Renesas Electronics China, said: "Since March 2017, the China Business Headquarters has become the only independent regional business unit of Renesas Electronics worldwide. In 2017, our revenue in China increased by nearly 20% compared with the previous year, and some of our products were developed and selected in China." Renesas Electronics has taken root in China and accelerated its growth, and has achieved good results. Although the specific sales figures have not yet been disclosed, it can be seen that the Chinese market is very important to Renesas Electronics.

New energy vehicles are developing rapidly under the impetus of China's policies. In November last year, Renesas Electronics established the Renesas Electronics China New Energy Vehicle Solution Center in China, and has established strategic partnerships with Great Wall Motors and Guoneng Automobile. Establishing a solution center in China can better promote and advance local innovation and quickly provide new energy vehicle solutions to customers.

"The difference between new energy vehicles and traditional vehicles is that the engine is replaced by an electric motor. Therefore, motor control is a very important business development direction for Renesas Electronics; on the other hand, battery management (BMS) is the second more important development direction. In the field of battery management, Renesas Electronics was weak before. Although the MCU on the BMS is Renesas Electronics' strength, it also requires some ICs such as monitoring. Therefore, Renesas Electronics completed the acquisition of Intersil Corporation of the United States last year. Intersil's BMS business has a very deep foundation in the European and American markets, which just makes up for Renesas Electronics' shortcomings in BMS for new energy vehicles." According to Mr. Zhao Mingyu, Senior Director of Renesas Electronics Automotive Electronics Sales Center, in the development process of automotive products, whether it is motor control or BMS battery management, Renesas Electronics' products can provide solution-level support for the A-sample of customer projects.

In terms of autonomous driving, Renesas Electronics launched the Renesas autonomy™ Platform[] in April 2017. Renesas Electronics has launched different solutions for the entire autonomous driving ecosystem, including cloud services, sensors, cognition, and control. The R-Car Alliance has been collaborating with more than 230 professional partners in research and development.

In order to familiarize users with the R-Car platform, Renesas Electronics has also developed an entry-level toolkit, where users can download the software to perform related applications or learn.

In addition to automotive electronics, smart factories and Industry 4.0 are also very hot topics in China. The "Made in China 2025" policy has also allowed Renesas Electronics to see some key demands in the digital industrial automation market. Dai Qihong, manager of the Industrial and Home Appliances Department of Renesas Electronics Industry Solution Center, introduced: "From continuously improving the efficiency of machines, to real-time analysis and process optimization, to realizing the intelligence of production processes and improving agility, and finally to providing service solutions to achieve analysis, while also taking into account the connection of industrial production security and the connection between IT and OT. Renesas Electronics is promoting the industrial development of smart factories through its own electronic technology!"

It has been exactly one year since Mr. Tomomitsu Mooka, Chairman of Renesas Electronics China, came to Shanghai to take up his post in March last year. In the past year, Tomomitsu Mooka has focused on four work directions: first, to seize opportunities for market growth and customer innovation, not only for customers that have direct cooperation with Renesas Electronics, but also for ecosystem developers and some emerging partners, to cooperate with them for mutual benefit; second, to cooperate with various local semiconductor-related companies in semiconductor design and production capabilities to achieve win-win development; third, to continuously communicate and exchange with the government and relevant agencies, in order to achieve better development in the local Chinese market; finally, to strengthen collaboration among Renesas Electronics' current companies in China, including branches with different functions covering sales, marketing, semiconductor product design and production. In the past, several companies have been operated and managed relatively independently. In the future, for the better development of Renesas Electronics in China, collaboration between different branches must be strengthened.

Starting from 2018, Renesas will also sponsor the Renesas Cup Information Technology Frontier Invitational Competition, a national college student electronic design competition, for the next ten years. The next invitational competition will focus on the IoT application field. Through this series of activities, more college students will be able to know and become familiar with the Renesas brand, know and use Renesas products or development boards, and in the future, it will also promote Renesas' brand influence in China.
