What is MEMS ? In what fields are these devices currently mainly used?

MEMS (Micro-Electro-Mechanical System) is the integration of miniaturized mechanical and electronic components, which builds a bridge between the physical world and the digital world at the perception and execution levels. With the development of technologies such as mobile Internet and Internet of Things, MEMS, as a key component to achieve the interaction between the two, has become increasingly prominent.

MEMS can accurately detect a variety of physical and chemical parameters such as force, temperature, humidity, vibration, etc., and convert this information into electrical signals for digital system processing. For example, in automation control, if you want to make a robotic arm do an inkjet action through a mobile phone or material terminal device, you need to first use MEMS to convert the electrical signal in the digital world into an analog signal to accurately control the position, color, shape and size of the ink droplets in the inkjet printer.

In the wave of AI, what can MEMS do?

The rise of artificial intelligence (AI) has opened up new prospects for the application of MEMS. Taking 3D vision as an example, the traditional two-dimensional imaging system uses image sensors to obtain three-dimensional objects as 2D images. This method can achieve the perception of objects to a certain extent, but the lack of information will limit the real perception of the real world. Texas Instruments' MEMS micromirror products have achieved the miniaturization and integration of 3D structured light modules. This 3D vision module can be used in household robots and industrial robots, which not only improves the robot's ability to understand the environment, but also realizes high-precision operation of parts assembly in industries such as automobile manufacturing. In addition, with the continuous advancement of MEMS technology and industry scale, the popularization of embodied intelligent robots will become possible in the future.

Compared with ordinary chips, what are the similarities and differences in MEMS manufacturing?

Compared with traditional integrated circuits (ICs) that pursue extreme size reduction (such as 5nm , 3nm, and 1nm processes ) , most MEMS devices use relatively large process nodes, such as 350nm processes, and some devices may be built using 90nm and 65nm processes. In general, although the manufacturing size of MEMS is also shrinking, compared with ICs, its size is usually larger, and the accuracy requirements are mainly concentrated at the micron and nanometer levels.

However, MEMS has higher requirements than IC in some aspects. For example, MEMS is more complicated in thin film process and etching process . In the manufacturing process, the structure of IC is more of a plane, and only electrical performance needs to be considered, while MEMS is a 3D structure. In essence, it converts the changes of various characteristic parameters (temperature, pressure, gas, flow, etc.) in the environment into the differences of various electrical signals (voltage, resistance, current, etc.) through microstructures. There are many external variables that need to be considered, such as stress, material metal type, film type, etc. There are also many challenges in dealing with different material properties and ensuring structural integrity.
