ON Semiconductor Launches High-Performance CMOS Global Shutter Image Sensor for Machine Vision and Mixed Reality Applications

The AR0234CS's high dynamic range and innovative pixel design provide superior image clarity at 120 frames per second

On October 9, 2020, ON Semiconductor, driving energy-efficient innovation, launched the AR0234CS 2.3-megapixel CMOS image sensor with global shutter technology. This high-performance sensor is designed for a variety of applications, including machine vision cameras, augmented reality (AR)/virtual reality (VR)/mixed reality (MR) headsets, autonomous mobile robots (AMR) and barcode readers.


The AR0234CS captures 1080p video and single-frame images at up to 120 frames per second (fps). The 2.3-megapixel sensor produces clear images with its industry-leading shutter efficiency, minimizing frame-to-frame distortion in high-speed scenes and reducing motion artifacts encountered with other image sensors.


The AR0234CS sensor's innovative pixel architecture provides the wide dynamic range required to support a wide range of lighting conditions, from dark nights to bright sunlight. Low noise and improved low-light response make it suitable for applications across consumer, commercial and industrial Internet of Things (IoT), and the extended operating temperature range enables it to be deployed in challenging outdoor conditions.


“As more manufacturers adopt vision-based expert systems for automation, the demand for high-quality image perception is increasing,” said Gianluca Colli, vice president and general manager of the Industrial and Consumer Solutions Division of the Intelligent Sensing Group at ON Semiconductor. “This demand requires optimizing image sensors for size, performance and power consumption. ON Semiconductor was one of the first manufacturers to recognize this need and responded with the AR0234CS.”


Other advanced features of the AR0234CS include programmable region of interest with on-chip histogram, automatic exposure control and 5 x 5 statistics engine, fully integrated strobe illumination control, flexible row and column skipping modes, as well as horizontal and vertical mirroring, windowing and pixel binning.


Together with the AP1302 Image Signal Processor (ISP), the AR0234CS provides a comprehensive camera system that can be quickly designed and developed for fast time to market. In addition, system designers can access the DevSuite software to evaluate the sensor's features and capabilities, configure and fine-tune, and provide ready-made outputs for further image processing.
