While most of Apple's product line is currently up to date, there are still a few devices and accessories that have not been updated in recent years. This article summarizes 5 products that Apple has not updated the hardware in at least two years. Of course, this does not include software updates, or previous generation products such as the iPhone 11 and Apple Watch Series 3.
Apple last updated the iPod touch in May 2019 with an A10 chip and a new 256GB storage option, bringing it to nearly three years old. The seventh-generation iPod touch retains the same design as the sixth-generation model, including a 4-inch Retina display, a Home button without Touch ID, a 3.5mm headphone jack, a Lightning connector, and a single speaker and microphone.
The device is available in six colors, including space gray, silver, pink, blue, gold, and (PRODUCT)RED. Apple redesigned its website last year and no longer advertises the iPod touch on its product page, but the device is still available for purchase. There haven't been any concrete rumors that Apple is working on a new iPod touch, so it remains to be seen if the device will be updated again or if it will eventually be discontinued.
The second-generation Magic Mouse for Mac was launched in October 2015, making it more than six years old. In that time, the mouse hasn't received any hardware updates, but the latest mouse comes with a braided USB-C to Lightning data cable in the box. The Magic Mouse 2 is also available in a variety of new colors when purchased with a 24-inch iMac.
The Magic Mouse 2 was notorious for having a Lightning connector on the bottom, rendering the mouse unusable while charging.
The second-generation Apple Pencil was released in October 2018 alongside the new iPad Pro, making it almost three and a half years old. A key feature of the second-generation Apple Pencil over the original is that it can be magnetically attached to a third-generation iPad Pro or newer iPad Pro for wireless charging. Users can also switch between drawing tools and brushes in apps like Notes by double-tapping the second-generation Apple Pencil's built-in touch sensor.
While the base Mac mini configuration was updated with the Apple M1 chip in November 2020, the higher-end configurations with Intel processors haven't been updated since October 2018, aside from Apple's rejiggering of storage capacities.
Rumor has it that Apple plans to release new high-end Mac mini configurations equipped with M1 Pro and M1 Max later this year.
AirPods Pro launched in October 2019, nearly two and a half years ago. According to often accurate analyst Ming-Chi Kuo, Apple plans to launch the second-generation AirPods Pro in the fourth quarter of 2022. Kuo expects the new AirPods Pro to be equipped with an upgraded wireless chip, support lossless audio, and have a newly designed charging box that supports sound when finding. Bloomberg's Mark Gurman and Debby Wu previously reported that Apple has tested a more compact design for the second-generation AirPods Pro that would eliminate the earphone stem that drops under the earphones. If this becomes the final design, the new AirPods Pro may look similar to the Beats Studio Buds that Apple released last year.
