According to a whistleblower @手机陶瓷达人 who is close to the supply chain in Taiwan Province of China, the long-rumored Apple AR/VR headset will be equipped with a derivative version of the M2 chip (codenamed Staten), plus a co-processor Bora chip. He said that the two chips are manufactured by TSMC and are expected to be mass-produced at the end of the fourth quarter of 2022.
IT Home reported that there was news last week that the development of Apple's M2 processor is almost completed and will adopt TSMC's 4nm process. In the future, Apple's self-developed computer chips will be upgraded every 18 months.
Foreign media predict that in the second half of 2022, Apple will first launch the M2 chip code-named Staten, and then launch the new M2X chip architecture code-named Rhodes in the first half of 2023, and release two chips, M2 Pro and M2 Max, based on different display cores.
In addition, the M2 Staten will still use an 8-core design, but the main frequency will be higher. The GPU core will increase from 7 or 8 in the M1 to 9 or 10, which means that its CPU and graphics performance will be improved compared to the M1, making it more suitable for platforms with higher GPU requirements.
It is worth mentioning that according to data from research institutions, Apple’s M1 chip currently uses a 5nm process, which is expected to account for 25% of TSMC’s current 5nm process production capacity. Therefore, the new generation of high-end chips may be in short supply.
