On September 19, according to Korean media Business Korea, sources said that Apple is developing two folding phones, one that opens left and right, and the other that opens up and down. Apple’s first folding phone is expected to be released in 2023. Apple is currently developing foldable panels with LG Display.
In fact, as early as the end of last year, news came out that Apple was planning to launch a foldable iPhone and had sent samples to Foxconn for testing, and it is expected to be launched in September 2022.
It can also be seen from the patents applied by Apple in the past two years that Apple is actively developing flexible display screens and hinge technologies. Because the problems of foldable screen mobile phones mainly focus on the screen and hinge, only by solving these two major problems can Apple launch related products.
Last year, the supply chain also revealed that in order to make the first foldable iPhone come out as soon as possible, Apple has been testing key components such as the screen and bearings of the foldable phone. The screen panel will still be provided by Samsung, and there are several suppliers for bearings. The Taiwanese manufacturer is Shin Nihon as the main supplier, and the assembly is estimated to be handled by Foxconn.
Ma Qiu, a senior analyst at market research firm Magillo Consulting, pointed out that Huawei's single-layer or double-layer CPI (transparent polyimide) and Samsung Electronics' "PET+UTG" are not perfect solutions. If Corning can provide a better folding screen cover solution, it will further promote the maturity of foldable screen mobile phones and accelerate the time to market for Apple's foldable screen iPhone.
