This week, Apple released repairability scores for its flagship iPhone and Mac products in France, a metric mandated by the country's government in January.
These scores, called the Repair Index, are now displayed on the official app purchase pages of the Apple Store and on Apple's website, MacGeneration reported. Contemporary flagship devices including the iPhone 12, iPhone 11, and iPhone SE series, as well as the MacBook Pro and MacBook Air, are marked with information designed to provide insight into the product life cycle.
In addition, Apple has published a dedicated page on its French website with a link to a detailed Repair Index report covering documentation; disassembly, access and tools; parts availability; parts pricing; and software and service support. The index is self-reported and assigned based on a cumulative score across a range of subcategories.
All current iPhone 12 models received a 6 out of 10 score. The iPhone 11 and 11 Pro received a 4.6, while the iPhone 11 Pro Max received a 4.5. Apple rated the iPhone SE 2 at 6.2. On the Mac side, the 2020 MacBook Air ranked highest with a 6.5 out of 10, followed by the 2020 16-inch MacBook Pro with a score of 6.3 and the 2020 13-inch MacBook Pro M1 with a score of 5.6.
France's repairability score requirements came into effect on January 1 and apply to manufacturers of smartphones, laptops, TVs, washing machines, etc. The legislation was enacted to reduce waste and promote a circular economy. Although manufacturers assign their own scores, they are subject to formal review by the relevant agencies.
