Rumor has it that Apple's upcoming "Apple Glass" headset may support unlocking the iPhone, and Apple has now obtained a patent for this research, which is similar to the way users unlock their Macs when wearing an Apple Watch.
The patent shows that users do not need to repeatedly unlock their iPhone, iPad, Mac or other devices, but only need to authenticate once through "Apple Glass".
The patent explains: "Many electronic devices restrict access to various functions based on authentication of the user's identity." When multiple devices are used simultaneously, the process of unlocking each device individually may delay user access and reduce the quality of the user experience.
Apple's proposed solution "includes a certified device that the user can wear as a head-mounted device." Nearby or "proximate" devices can be iPhones, iPad Pros, Macs, etc.
So, pick up your iPhone while wearing Apple Glass — without even necessarily looking at the phone — and you can use it directly, rather than entering a passcode or waiting for Face ID.
Apple says there may be different levels of authentication. Picking up an iPhone or iPad while wearing "Apple Glass" may allow limited usage. This is similar to how you can now have notifications appear on the lock screen, or allow access to the Control Center without unlocking.
