Samsung's first MOSFET-based refrigerator inverter design uses Infineon's 600 V CoolMOS™ PFD7
Infineon Technologies AG has supplied Samsung Electronics Co., Ltd. with power products that offer the highest energy efficiency and lowest noise. These power devices have been integrated into Samsung's latest single-door (RR23A2J3XWX, RR23A2G3WDX) and double-door (RF18A5101SR) inverter refrigerators. Inverter is an emerging trend in contemporary inverter design that uses DC to AC conversion. Compared to traditional on/off control, inverters allow product applications to run more quietly and smoothly, while also reducing average power consumption.
To meet Samsung's requirements for improved efficiency, lower system costs and reduced noise, Digi Touch Cool™ and Curd Maestro™ use a variety of Infineon power solutions: EiceDRIVER™ gate driver IC, CoolSET™ Gen 5 IC for AC/DC conversion, and 600 V CoolMOS™ PFD7 for driving compressor motors. This is the first time that Samsung's refrigerators use discrete devices in the compressor motor drive design instead of power modules.
The 600 V CoolMOS PFD7 super junction MOSFET integrates a superior reverse fast recovery body diode, which improves the device's reverse recovery performance and provides the industry's fastest reverse recovery time (trr), making it an ideal choice for home appliance motor drive designs. Compared with module-based drive designs, the use of MOSFETs can better reduce losses, especially under light load conditions, and the efficiency can be increased by 1.7%. Not only that, this innovative approach also enables heat sink-free system design, reducing costs by 10%, while also extending the service life of the refrigerator.
“Until now, the vast majority of home appliances have been designed as modules,” said Stefan Obersriebnig, Vice President of High Voltage Products at Infineon Technologies’ Power and Sensor Systems division. “We are pleased that Infineon’s leading MOSFET technology can help Samsung achieve higher efficiency levels at lower system costs in home appliances.”
