Zoss Research released the "2020 Commercial Vehicle  ADAS  Industry Research Report", focusing on the  ADAS  applications of major bus and truck OEMs, as well as the development status of commercial vehicle  ADAS  suppliers.

Commercial vehicles include large buses and trucks. Due to their large size, many blind spots, and driver fatigue, they are prone to traffic accidents. ADAS functions, including emergency braking systems, lane keeping systems, and driver monitoring systems, can effectively solve the above problems and thus reduce the incidence of accidents.

Commercial vehicle ADAS can be divided into warning, control and networking types according to their specific functions. The networking ADAS function is an advanced driver assistance function that has emerged with the development of smart transportation , smart cities and vehicle intelligent networking technology , and is currently being continuously expanded and improved.

Commercial vehicle ADAS has a single function and lags behind passenger vehicles in development

Due to the relatively small overall sales volume, the update speed of commercial vehicle models is much lower than that of passenger cars, so the ADAS functions are relatively simple, and the progress of ADAS applications lags behind that of passenger cars.

For example, the sales volume of L2-class vehicles in China's passenger car market has exceeded 15%, but L2-class trucks have just been mass-produced. Zhu Qixin, general manager of FAW Jiefang, believes that the next three years (2021-2023) will be the promotion period for L2-class trucks.

The ADAS functions of trucks that are currently in mass production mainly include: ACC, AEBS, LDW, DMS, FCW, and blind spot monitoring.

Daimler's new Actros is the world's first mass-produced truck to achieve full-speed L2 autonomous driving. In September 2020, Daimler demonstrated the fifth-generation Actros model, equipped with the fifth-generation active brake assist system (ABA5). Through the collaboration of radar and camera systems, ABA 5 can identify the vehicle in front, stationary obstacles and various pedestrian states on the road under certain conditions, such as oncoming, crossing the road, walking on the road or suddenly stopping pedestrians. And give graded prompts to the driver. If the driver does not respond adequately, the system will slow down to intervene or take full emergency braking within the limit, and start the electronic parking system after the vehicle stops. Under certain driving conditions, the system can provide the driver with functions such as longitudinal and lateral guidance of the vehicle, automatic maintenance of the following distance, automatic acceleration and steering.

At the end of 2019, FAW Jiefang J7 high-end intelligent heavy truck was launched with the "Zhi Tu Ling Hang" intelligent driving assistance system, which mainly includes ADAS functions such as lane centering control (LKS) technology, ACC, AEBS, driver fatigue assistance, FCW, etc. The hardware of the whole vehicle mainly adds on-board radar, camera and other configurations, and the price is not much more expensive than the regular version of Jiefang J7.

At the end of 2019, Shaanxi Automobile Heavy Duty Truck Delong X6000 was unveiled. Delong X6000 is equipped with ADAS systems such as LDW, DMS, environmental monitoring system, ACC, and AEBS.

There are many reasons for the slow progress of commercial vehicle ADAS, one of which is the limitation of the wire-controlled chassis. It is relatively easy to make warning ADAS, but the control ADAS function requires the wire-controlled chassis to be open enough and lower the threshold. The Tier 1 of commercial vehicle steering and braking systems are mainly Wabco and Knorr. From the perspective of domestic commercial vehicle OEMs, they are also waiting for the maturity of domestic wire-controlled chassis solutions. For example, domestic wire-controlled chassis solutions such as Wanan have entered the testing stage.

In the light passenger vehicle market, ADAS functions helped SAIC Maxus surpass Jiangling Transit in sales

From January to August 2020, the cumulative sales of light commercial vehicles reached 197,000, a year-on-year decrease of 1.9%. In August, SAIC Maxus had the largest increase in sales, reaching 63%, while Jiangling light commercial vehicle sales fell by 17%.

In addition to its excellent power performance, SAIC MAXUS's stronger ADAS configuration also helps a lot.

Maxus V90 is equipped with ACC, AEB, LDW, FCW and other configurations, which can realize blind spot monitoring, lane change assistance and other functions. It is also equipped with Bosch 9.3 version ESP, providing active safety protection comparable to that of luxury cars. The Maxus RV90 C, which uses the V90 chassis, has safety and comfort configurations including smart start-stop, ACC, AEB, LDW, streaming media rearview mirror, LED automatic sensing headlights, automatic wipers and other configurations.

The current Jiangling Transit models are only equipped with the most basic safety configurations, such as the Bosch 8.0 version ABS+EBD+ESP system. Although it is also equipped with a reversing radar, it does not have a reversing image. At the same time, LCA lane change assistance, LDW, FCW, etc. are not equipped.

In order to narrow the gap in ADAS, Jiangling launched the Transit Pro at the 2020 Beijing Auto Show, with a pre-sale price range of 168,800-239,800 yuan, and is scheduled to be officially launched on December 6. The new generation of Transit Pro uses the Mobil EyeQ4 chip and corresponding ADAS function package, iFlytek Feiyu 2.0 intelligent network system, EPAS electronic shift system, and the latest Bosch 9.3 version ESP as standard for the entire series.

Intelligent buses are fully integrated into vehicle-road collaboration and intelligent transportation

Since buses often travel on fixed roads in urban areas, intelligent buses are fully integrated into vehicle-road collaboration and intelligent transportation. Major bus OEMs have launched similar solutions.

In September 2020, Yutong Bus released the WITGO smart travel solution, which has been implemented in Zhengdong New District, Zhengzhou. It aims to implement the construction of an urban smart travel transportation system around six aspects: smart cars, smart roads, smart platforms, unmanned stations, cloud control platforms, and automatic charging. Yutong's smart driving bus U12 can realize automatic acceleration and deceleration, automatic steering, vehicle-road collaboration, automatic identification of traffic lights through intersections, automatic entry, automatic parking and other functions, achieving L3 level autonomous driving capabilities. In terms of intelligent networking, it is equipped with 360-degree panoramic view, collision mitigation control system, driving behavior monitoring, throttle anti-misstepping, parking brake, ramp assist and other multi-functions.

In 2020, Suzhou Kinglong released a new strategy: to become a solution provider for smart transportation systems. The solution includes four major modules: smart public transportation, smart platforms, smart operations, and smart travel. Suzhou Kinglong Azure's ADAS system includes fatigue driving warning, automatic emergency braking, lane departure warning, electronic rearview mirror and 360° panoramic view system, and driver status monitoring.

In August 2020, Zhongtong Bus officially released the "Smart Road + Smart Bus + Cloud Control Platform". At the same time, Zhongtong Bus's "5G Smart Driving Bus" was unveiled in the island city and put on the road for test operation. It is reported that the bus has functions such as interaction, autonomous cruising, and vehicle-road collaboration, and can realize traffic light recognition, precise stop-in, emergency avoidance, and forward crossing warning.

The "5G Intelligent Autonomous Driving" bus is equipped with many cameras and radars, such as two 16-line laser radars on the A-pillar of the vehicle to sense objects in front and on the sides; millimeter-wave radars to detect the distance of objects in front of the vehicle; and 12 ultrasonic radars for low-speed parking and obstacle warning.

The 5G smart driving vehicle also works in coordination with the smart bus intelligent network platform, which integrates advanced equipment such as blood pressure and alcohol testing, one-click alarm, fatigue driving monitoring, 8-channel video surveillance, anti-collision warning, vehicle danger meter, gyroscope, 360-degree panoramic view and electronic rearview mirror to achieve information interaction between people, people and vehicles, and vehicles and roads.

In terms of bus ADAS, the China Bus Safety Assessment Procedure (C-SCAP) launched in May 2018 deserves attention. C-SCAP builds an assessment system from four dimensions: braking safety, stability safety, structural safety, and protection safety. Among them, the braking safety category includes three sub-items: braking performance, ABS performance, and AEB performance; the stability safety category includes four sub-items: handling stability, roll stability, ESC performance, and LDW performance; the additional category includes three sub-items: driver status monitoring, intelligent speed limit reminder, and three-point seat belts for the entire vehicle.

ADAS technology solution provider achieves breakthrough in commercial vehicle market

The highly fragmented commercial vehicle market provides domestic ADAS solution providers with different opportunities to enter the market.

The G5 device launched by Zhongtian Anchi is a DSM+ADAS all-in-one device, which has made breakthroughs in general cargo and hazardous chemicals transportation. Zhongtian Anchi ADAS service has served hundreds of thousands of commercial vehicles.

Kaiyi Technology has entered the aftermarket by integrating SDK services with ADAS functions and cooperating with smart vehicle solution providers and brand owners. Its software products reduce the requirements for chip computing power through model compression and hardware acceleration technology. At present, the total number of users of Kaiyi Technology's aftermarket products (mainly smart rearview mirrors) has reached nearly 10 million.
