Starting this month, Hangzhou and six other cities will be the first in China to experience 4G networks, but commercial use will have to wait; China Mobile said that 4G rates are definitely not more expensive than 3G. Starting in April, Hangzhou B1 Bus Rapid Transit Line will open 4G networks for free, making Hangzhou the first city in my country to open 4G networks. However, at present, Hangzhou's 4G network is still in the experience stage and has not been truly commercialized. So, is the 4G era really coming? How far away is 4G from us?

The speed of playing movies is two or three seconds buffer

Recently, the reporter boarded the B1 express bus and started a 4G experience journey. According to reports, China Mobile has installed wireless routers at the front and rear of the B1 bus and at the bus stop, which can convert the 4G network into WIFI signals. Following the instructions of the mobile staff on the bus, the reporter turned on the WIFI and connected to the "CMCC-4G" wireless network. Then he used the SaFaRi browser on his phone to open the web page. The phone immediately popped up the "China Mobile 4G Network Experience" page. He clicked "Start Experience" and was able to access the Internet.

Is the 4G network really as fast as the legend says? The reporter opened the PPTV video player and randomly clicked on a movie "City of Aromas". The buffering was completed in just three or two seconds. Such a buffering speed is difficult to achieve in a 3G network environment. Then, the reporter downloaded a 4M song "Not That Simple". As soon as he clicked the "Download" button, he heard a "ding" sound, and the download was completed.

It is understood that under good network signal conditions, it only takes 1 second to download a 7M high-quality song on the 4G network; it only takes 2 minutes to download a 700M CD; it only takes 8 minutes to download a 2.8G Encyclopedia Britannica; and it only takes one day to download a 40G Blu-ray 3D movie on a typical home 4M broadband, but only two hours on mobile 4G.

However, the reporter's download speed on the B1 bus was not ideal, with an average speed of about 450KB/S. The staff explained that the current 4G test network speed on the B1 bus can reach up to 70M, and generally stabilizes at around 40M. If multiple people on the bus are watching or downloading high-definition videos at the same time, the network will be overloaded.

Promotion: Hangzhou and other 6 cities will experience it one after another

According to the plan, China Mobile will build 10 4G base stations in Hangzhou every day, and will build 2,000 base stations by the end of this year, which is expected to cover the main urban areas of Hangzhou, Xiaoshan and Yuhang, and initially realize wireless high-speed Internet access for all people. At present, in addition to opening 4G network on B1 buses, Hangzhou Zijing Home Community has also taken the lead in enjoying 4G network as a pilot area.

As a new generation of broadband mobile communication technology developed by my country, TD-LTE was designated as the 4G technology standard by the International Telecommunication Union in October 2010. It is understood that in addition to Hangzhou, five cities including Shanghai, Nanjing, Guangzhou, Shenzhen and Xiamen will also launch 4G network experience.

It is worth mentioning that the smooth evolution technology from 3G to 4G network jointly developed by China Mobile Zhejiang Branch and Huawei has reduced the cost of 4G network construction by 90% and reduced the construction time of a single base station from about 2 months to 3 days.

"According to the original independent network construction method, antennas and other equipment must be added. Now, with this method, the original antennas and network equipment can be shared. As long as the circuit board is replaced and a small amount of optical fiber is laid between the circuit board and the antenna, the network upgrade can be achieved." said Zhong Tianhua, general manager of China Mobile Zhejiang Company.

Price: Definitely not more expensive than 3G

Regarding the 4G charges that netizens are more concerned about, the mobile company said that since Hangzhou's 4G network is still in the trial stage, the 4G charging policy has not yet been formulated, but it will definitely not be more expensive than 3G.

It is understood that there are currently two international 4G communication standards: TD-LTE and FDD-LTE. The FDD-LTE standard was officially put into commercial use in Europe and the United States at the beginning of last year. As of October 2011, 248 operators around the world have confirmed plans to deploy LTE commercial networks, of which 35 networks have been officially put into commercial use, and 150 companies are deploying commercial networks.

Although TD-LTE has been recognized internationally, the commercialization process in my country lags far behind that of countries such as Japan and India. "The current international situation is that FDD technology has been commercialized for nearly a year, and the companies that master TD technology and control equipment production are mainly Chinese companies, but these companies are busy taking orders from abroad." Fang Xingdong, president of Global Network, said, "The launch of domestic 4G networks requires the competent authorities to 'blow the whistle', otherwise this market will not start."

Some experts suggest that given that the cost of upgrading China Mobile's existing 3G to 4G network can be greatly reduced, and China Unicom's WCDMA network and China Telecom's CDMA2000 network can be smoothly evolved to 4G at a very low cost, the time is ripe for my country to commercialize 4G on a large scale. "We should seize the opportunity to promote 4G commercialization as soon as possible and seize the commanding heights of global mobile Internet competition," said Fang Xingdong.
