Memory and foundry drive investment growth in 2010
According to a Wall Street analyst, semiconductor fixed asset investment in 2010 may reach US$33.5 billion, a 50% increase over 2009, driven again by memory and foundry industries.
Due to the tight capacity of memory in 2009, manufacturers began to increase investment in 2010 to meet the increase in market demand. According to the forecast of Barclays Capital analyst CJ Muse, investment in the semiconductor industry increased by 42% in 2010. By comparison, memory increased by 38% compared with 2009, but decreased by 63% compared with 2007.
Foundry investment will rise from US$5 billion in 2009 to US$9 billion in 2010. It is expected that investment will be concentrated in TSMC and new plants Globalfoundries and Samsung, all of which want to expand their market share in foundry.
Muse predicted in October last year that global semiconductor industry investment would reach US$31 billion in 2010, a year-on-year increase of 45%.
