Compared with building intercom, Internet telephony can be said to have been used in our daily life for quite some time.

In general, Internet telephony refers to a system for voice communication in a computer network with IP as the network layer protocol. The technology it uses is collectively called VoIP (Voice over IP), which means that voice transmission is achieved through the network. From a technical point of view, IP Internet telephony is the result of the integration of two major mainstream technologies: network grouping marked by IP and network service integration with multimedia as the goal.

With the improvement of network construction and the continuous improvement of network environment, the boundary between computer and telecommunication is gradually broken down. Therefore, Internet phone is born in this integration.

As for network videophone, it has the characteristics of low price, flexible service, and convenient internal communication of enterprises. At the same time, it is also of great help to the integration of new technologies. In network calls, its voice processing mainly solves two problems, namely, reducing the encoding bit rate as much as possible while maintaining the call quality. The other is to ensure a certain call quality in the IP network environment. The introduction of the video link is a technical addition based on the guarantee of audio transmission.

Although both use IP network to realize video transmission, they are slightly different. IP video intercom is also called full digital intercom, which is a digital product evolved from the original bus-type video intercom system.

The IP video intercom system adopts the latest digital audio and video compression, DSP, embedded and streaming media network transmission technologies, combined with the characteristics of the home intelligent gateway system, and uses the community's local area network to transmit audio and video over the network. In addition to video transmission, it can also complete the work effects of alarm, access control, and smart home appliance control.

From the above analysis, we can see that although they have slight differences in some functions, they can both meet our needs for video communication at different ends. So, does this commonality mean that they can be more easily integrated? Let's make a simple analysis below.

  Differences in communication modes

Although they have very similar functions, their implementation methods are quite different. For Internet phone, its communication process is mainly based on calls between computers, phones, or computers and Internet phone. Internet video intercom mainly exists in some special regional security management systems such as door host and each extension, or management center and indoor extension. Although they are both video communications, the difference between their service terminals is still very obvious, which also brings more different emphasis directions in the specific use of technology.

  Differences in transmission paths

In addition to the difference in terminals, there are also significant differences in the signal transmission path. For IP network phones, it focuses more on voice communication between network devices, while video intercom focuses more on the transmission of control signals between local area networks. Therefore, if you want to use network video phones for signal control of devices, it is still very limited in the types of signal transmission.

Differences in audio and video quality

In the process of audio and video transmission, network videophone considers more about the impact of bandwidth. Due to different network environments, this kind of transmission is more of a necessary trade-off based on audio and video quality and network transmission environment. Therefore, under such requirements, high compression becomes an indispensable processing link for network videophone. However, high compression ratio will inevitably lead to a decrease in audio and video quality. Therefore, if you want to maintain high-quality audio and video effects on network videophone, it is still very difficult based on current technology.

Since video intercom uses a single audio and video line for transmission, the video quality is much better in LAN transmission. However, due to the lack of processing equipment like videophones, the problem of echo is still very difficult to solve in terms of sound quality.

  Differences in usage requirements

In addition to the differences caused by technical factors, users also have very different views on Internet phone and video intercom. For Internet phone, users pay more attention to the transmission capability of audio and video in the application. To be more precise, it should be the transmission capability of audio, that is, the biggest role of Internet phone is to build a bridge of communication for users.

As for video intercom, it is more of an exchange for security management and communication. For example, the control of the front-end access control system, the sending and receiving of community broadcasts, the alarm of the security system, etc. The relatively low quality of Internet phone work is also an unbearable aspect in security applications to a certain extent.

From the above analysis, we can see that, whether in terms of technology or application requirements, the difference between video intercom and Internet phone is still very large.

However, due to the huge cost difference between Internet phone and Internet video intercom, many manufacturers have transplanted Internet phone technology into video intercom applications with almost no changes. Although such a change has a great innovation in cost savings, the side effects on security work are huge, and sometimes there is even a feeling of "irrelevant" when using it.
