Texas Instruments' new family of programmable logic products allows engineers to integrate up to 40 logic and analog functions on a single chip, significantly reducing board size compared to discrete implementations.

Shanghai, China (October 22, 2024) – Texas Instruments (TI) (NASDAQ: TXN) recently launched a series of programmable logic devices (PLDs). This product series is based on TI's outstanding logic product series and is designed to help engineers simplify logic design for any application. TI's new PLD product series can integrate up to 40 combinational and sequential logic and analog functions in a single device, which can help reduce circuit board size by up to 94% and reduce system costs compared to discrete logic implementations. In addition, the new product series also saves a lot of space compared to similar programmable logic devices on the market.

With Texas Instruments' easy-to-use InterConnect Studio tool, engineers can design, simulate and configure their devices for evaluation in minutes without any software coding. InterConnect Studio accelerates the logic device design process with a drag-and-drop GUI and integrated simulation capabilities. Designers can also use convenient point-and-click programming and direct ordering features. These features simplify programming and procurement, helping to speed up product launch.

The key

"Engineers are increasingly considering programmable logic devices to reduce design complexity, reduce board space, simplify supply chain management and shorten time to market," said Tsedeniya Abraham, vice president and general manager of TI's interface products division. "However, existing programmable logic devices are too complex for many applications, require programming expertise or offer limited package options. Our new programmable logic family builds on TI's 60 years of experience in logic product design and is available in industry-standard packages as small as 2.56mm2, low power consumption, AEC Q-100 qualification and a -40°C to 125°C temperature range for applications such as automotive, industrial and personal electronics."

More details

TI's PLD product line includes ultra-small leaded packages measuring 2.1mm x 1.6mm with a 0.5mm pitch. This leaded package is 92% smaller than similar devices on the market, meeting manufacturers' soldering needs, but with a significantly reduced size. TI's automotive-grade PLDs are 63% smaller than the closest comparable product on the market. This product line also offers a Quad Flat No-Lead (QFN) package option that supports automated optical inspection to ensure safety and long-term system reliability.

With quiescent current of less than 1µA and 50 percent lower active power than competing devices on the market, the new TI PLDs help extend battery life in products such as electric vehicles, power tools, battery packs and game controllers.

All of Texas Instruments' new PLD products support general-purpose input/output, lookup tables, digital flip-flops, pipeline delays, filters, and resistor-capacitor oscillators. The TPLD1201 and TPLD1202 devices also integrate analog functions such as analog comparators with internal selectable voltage reference options and hysteresis. The TPLD1202 has additional features such as serial peripheral interface, I2C, watchdog timer, and state machine.
