Murata Manufacturing sets new carbon neutrality goal
Responding to climate change has become an urgent task for the international community. Against this backdrop, Murata Manufacturing Co., Ltd. has decided to advance its goal of achieving 100% renewable energy utilization by 15 years and set a new carbon neutrality target.
To achieve carbon neutrality, the Company will achieve net zero greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions by fiscal 2040 and net zero GHG emissions, including in the supply chain, by fiscal 2050. By doing so, we will accelerate the strengthening of our climate change countermeasures and contribute to the realization of a sustainable society.
Murata Manufacturing has always attached great importance to the "cultural development" and "practical scientific management" in its business philosophy, actively promoted environmental protection while operating business activities, and set and implemented high-difficulty goals in response to climate change. In view of the frequent abnormal weather in recent years and the intensified changes in the international situation related to climate, the company has brought forward the plan to introduce renewable energy on the basis of the current plan and set a new decarbonization target to contribute to the mitigation of climate change.
First , we will bring forward our RE100 goal of converting 100% of electricity used in business activities to renewable energy by 15 years , from 2050 to 2035 (see figure below).
Bringing forward the timeline for achieving RE100 from 2050 to 2035
We have already stepped up efforts such as installing solar power generation equipment on our own land and purchasing additional stable renewable energy through physical and virtual PPA agreements. As a result, the Group's overall renewable energy introduction ratio reached 36.5% in fiscal 2023, exceeding the target of 25% in fiscal 2024 set out in the Medium-Term Policy 2024. We will further accelerate efforts to purchase renewable energy and explore new means to achieve 100% renewable energy by fiscal 2035.
Secondly , while accelerating the work related to achieving RE100, we are also vigorously promoting the reduction of GHG emissions generated by fuel and gas consumption, setting new targets for achieving GHG net zero emissions , striving to achieve Scope 1+2 GHG net zero emissions (carbon neutrality) in 2040, and achieving carbon neutrality for the entire supply chain including Scope 3 in 2050 - after achieving a 90% reduction compared to the base year through our own efforts, the remaining emissions will be offset using internationally recognized carbon credits.
Setting new targets for achieving net zero GHG emissions
Murata obtained SBTi certification in 2021 and set a target of reducing GHG emissions in Scope 1+2 by 46% (1.5℃ target) and Scope 3 by 27.5% (WB2℃ target) by 2030, and has been promoting emission reduction efforts.
In terms of emission reduction in Scope 1, we develop and implement approximately 500 new energy-saving measures each year to curb the increase in energy consumption due to business expansion, which is equivalent to reducing 40,000 to 50,000 tons of carbon dioxide. In the future, we will further promote energy conservation and fuel adjustments to reduce GHG gases emitted into the atmosphere during production processes. For GHG that cannot be eliminated, we will use carbon credits to offset carbon to achieve our goals.
In terms of Scope 3, we explained our company's approach to more than 200 suppliers in fiscal 2023 and requested their understanding and cooperation.
Murata has begun to refine data by visiting and soliciting opinions from some suppliers. In addition, the company has implemented measures to change the model and improve loading efficiency to reduce emissions caused by logistics. With the cooperation of stakeholders including suppliers, we will continue to refine data and accelerate emission reduction efforts.
The Murata Group has set "strengthening climate change measures" as a key issue and is working to achieve a decarbonized society, thereby contributing to solving global social issues. To achieve the new goal for fiscal 2050, we will strive to achieve a virtuous cycle of economic and social value by further reducing environmental burdens.
