ADI recently held a unique Power Workshop in Beijing, and the media present said they were very satisfied! Lorry Liang, Marketing Director of ADI Power Products China, carefully selected several major categories of innovative products from tens of thousands of Power by Linear power products, and pointed out the power innovation trends in five popular application areas - targeting industrial, automotive, communications, energy and IoT applications respectively. "Three Dimensions" to Protect the Development of Industry 4.0


When talking about the industrial application field, which accounts for more than 40% of ADI's power business, Lorry concluded at the beginning that "the real essence and foundation of Industry 4.0 is more about how to provide real-time control, software-configurable I/O, and the reliability, safety and healthy operation of all these devices."


To achieve higher productivity, Industry 4.0 applications need to meet the following innovative requirements: flexibility, efficiency, communication, safety, and reliability. All industrial product applications are inseparable from power supplies. In terms of high power efficiency, small size, and low EMI, ADI can provide very strong support and a series of innovative products to meet the safety and reliability requirements of power supplies in different industrial application fields.


About 40%+ of ADI's entire power business comes from the industrial sector


As for the ultra-low EMI of power supply which is difficult to achieve, Lorry cited the latest generation LT8614 chip using Silent Switcher technology, which not only optimizes the magnetic field closed path through two reverse current loops, but also controls the ringing of SW rising edge to be very small through system loop optimization. Coupled with its highly optimized packaging process, its EMI is quite low. In addition, it also greatly reduces ripple, solves the noise problem, and makes the system reliability and stability excellent.



Lorry said that in China, most customers in the fields of robotics, industrial control, and even automobiles are very interested in Silent Switcher technology, because in the past, almost all industrial or automotive customers had to spend half a year to make rectifications just to solve the EMI certification problem, and only after passing the rectifications could they be put on the market. The emergence of Silent Switcher technology has saved our customers more than half a year.



In order to handle the situation of large voltage fluctuations in special industrial applications, ADI has also launched a very wide voltage isolated power supply (as shown in the figure above, the power supply width is 20V to 540V). At the same time, in order to reduce the design space of industrial customers and boards, ADI has also designed a highly integrated power module. This can greatly save customers' costs on device procurement, production reliability and materials.


From an industrial perspective, the above-mentioned excellent integrated circuit packaging processes and modular technologies can greatly help ADI's customers to design systems flexibly, further improve the safety and reliability of the systems, and make ADI's industrial products more stable.

Driving the future of safe cars


Whether it is power management, powertrain, infotainment system, headlights, etc., "safety" has always been a key word in the transformation of the automotive power product field. In the innovative solutions provided by ADI, this may be reflected in the ultra-low noise (electromagnetic interference), active battery balancing and energy optimization (safe driving for longer distances), high and low voltage bidirectional conversion, new surge and high voltage protection mechanisms, and other innovative technical features mentioned in Lorry's speech.


For example, in response to the coexistence of different voltages in automotive systems, the design concept of LTC3871 is as Lorry introduced, "The increase in current brought about by the increase in power of increasingly complex on-board electronics has led to thicker cables providing greater current capabilities. The emergence of the 48V system is to optimize cables and body wiring, but many system equipment still cannot migrate to the 48V system in the short term. Therefore, for quite a period of time, there will be a situation where the 48V system and the 12V system coexist. Connecting a 48V battery pack and a 12V battery pack can provide bidirectional power supply and manage the 48V and 12V systems. This can ensure the safe operation of the entire automotive system."




To this end, Lorry also showed the media a system board like the one shown above, and explained: "Its conversion power is 2.5 kilowatts and can provide very good stability. This is a very standard configuration in the new generation of 48V system cars, and can also achieve bidirectional voltage conversion."




From the perspective of the safety and reliability of the automotive system, the battery and increasingly complex systems will cause instantaneous high voltage when the car is started or when it is disturbed by an unexpected disturbance, which is likely to cause damage to the components. The traditional solution is to add a TVS tube, but it has disadvantages such as large size and relatively high weight. So how does ADI solve this problem?

We consider Surge Stopper, which eliminates all the interference power spikes of instantaneous pulses through feedback and MOSFET control, ensuring that the output voltage is within the standard range we set, making the body system safer. Combined with the controllable power supply process, the body system will not be damaged by unexpected interference.





Facing the power supply design challenges of 5G communications


As we all know, from 2G, 3G, 4G to 5G, ADI has been heavily involved in every iteration of the communication system, whether it is RF devices or power devices.


The current 5G communication system requires very high power density; in addition, the power consumption of the chip is also a problem. Another problem is how to improve the conversion efficiency.


Traditional DC/DC power supplies cannot achieve breakthrough efficiency under the current architecture due to the switching loss of MOSFET and the inductor conversion loss. ADI has developed a converter without inductor, LTC7820, which can increase efficiency to 99%. However, because the typical working principle is to fold the input voltage in half and step it down, the output voltage cannot be adjusted. Therefore, ADI has developed a hybrid switching power supply that combines the advantages of inductor-free high-efficiency converters and high-performance buck circuits, and applies other technologies and principles. While the output voltage can be adjusted at will, the efficiency is still maintained above 97%.

ADI has also made many other improvements in the innovation and adjustment of power supply technology for communication applications. For example, by combining the advantages of ideal diodes to support hot swapping, the communication system can achieve better stability than before. And through the power management system with a digital interface, the power supply status, voltage, current, temperature, etc. of each channel can be recorded, and even the output voltage can be controlled. Especially when the system is unstable, the PSM can be used to know where the circuit fault is. Therefore, the measurement and output adjustment functions of the PSM are increasingly reused in the communication field.




In addition to PSM, POE (Power over Ethernet) is also widely used in the communication field. POE can transmit data and power through network cables. Lorry shared: "ADI has now launched a 150-watt POE solution. The biggest advantage of this solution is that it can provide up to 150 watts of power for communication applications and layouts. The larger the capacity, the more power is required. 150 watts can provide a very perfect solution, which is also a strong technical platform for us in the field of communications."





Help develop efficient, clean and reliable energy systems


Energy is an important topic related to the national economy and people's livelihood. ADI can provide a good supporting power technology solution for smart grids, renewable energy generation and storage, enterprise energy management, electric vehicle charging pile infrastructure, etc.



For example, the national grid transmission tower usually installs an FCI to monitor parameters, but how to solve the power supply problem of high-voltage towers? Lorry explained: "ADI has a very complete solution for this kind of FCI. It is usually powered by a transformer or solar energy. Through the application of high-performance MPPT maximum power point tracking and charging management devices, the battery can obtain the maximum solar energy under the same lighting conditions."


In order to ensure that the system is powered on, ADI also proposed using supercapacitors as backup power supplies and provided them with complete energy storage and management solutions. For example, LTC3350 monitors four farad capacitors, not only balancing and charging/discharging the capacitors, but also supplementing the internal resistance of the capacitors and automatically balancing the energy of all capacitors. It is very powerful.


Energy harvesting technology can extend the life of IoT nodes


ADI has done a lot of research to solve the problem of continuous and convenient power supply for smart wearable devices and more IoT terminal nodes. Can vibration, temperature difference, light, magnetic field, etc. be turned into the required energy? ADI has also launched a series of innovative products, such as LTC3108 and LTC3588.



In addition, ADI has also achieved many major breakthroughs in other IoT directions. For example, optical and motion detection, impedance, biopotential and signal conditioning technologies have created the world's advanced medical care technology in wireless and wearable vital signs monitoring (VSM). And through precise geographic location detection, intelligent data collection and sensor fusion technology, real-time autonomous decision-making, higher resource efficiency, and simpler smart farms connected to the interconnected farm ecosystem.
