Remotely monitor changes in soil salt concentration using Murata soil sensors

Murata Manufacturing Co., Ltd. will conduct a joint demonstration experiment using soil sensors at the salt damage experimental farm of the irrigation ecosystem field experimental facility affiliated with the Graduate School of Life Sciences at Tohoku University, a national university corporation in Japan.


As global warming worsens, damage to agricultural land caused by salt damage is becoming increasingly severe. In order to maintain stable food production, research is being conducted to develop crops that are resistant to salt damage.

Murata Manufacturing has been conducting joint demonstration experiments with the Graduate School of Agriculture at Tohoku University since 2012, making full use of the sensors and communication technologies developed so far to solve the problem of salt damage to farms in tsunami-affected areas. This commercialized soil sensor can remotely monitor changes in soil salt concentration through the data communication technology of the gateway system, and is currently being adopted by companies and organizations in Japan and abroad.

In 2020, a research team from Japan's Agricultural Research Agency and Tohoku University published a paper stating that in a salt damage experimental field, rice with surface roots can suppress the decline in yield in the experimental farm.

Ground-root rice refers to rice that takes root near the surface and forms "ground roots". The research team believes that the formation of ground roots prevents the formation of salt damage in the soil of the experimental farm. In order to find the factors that affect the tolerance of ground-root rice, Murata Manufacturing plans to bury the soil sensor at different depths in the soil and conduct joint demonstration experiments.

The empirical experiment will be carried out from June 2022 to March 2023 at the Irrigation Ecology Field Experiment Facility affiliated with the Graduate School of Life Sciences, Tohoku University (Kashimadai, Osaki City, Miyagi Prefecture). The main equipment used is soil sensors.

Murata Manufacturing will continue to work with the research team at Tohoku University to solve the social issue of salt damage in the agricultural field.
