Leiphone.com: As ICRA 2017 draws to a close, we have also ushered in another climax of the conference - Award Ceremony. This conference will present a series of awards to individuals and teams who have made great contributions and academic achievements in the field of robotics and automation. Leiphone.com has previously introduced the winning papers in various sub-fields and has also made detailed introductions to the content of the papers.
But did you know that two of the outstanding researchers who won the ICRA Award will attend the CCF-GAIR conference on July 7 this year, which is hosted by CCF and co-organized by Leiphone.com and the Chinese University of Hong Kong (Shenzhen)! Who are these two people and what contributions have they made to be recognized by ICRA? Let’s take a look with Leiphone.com AI Technology Review!
Oussama Khatib: ICRA's highest honor recipient
Oussama Khatib, a professor at Stanford University and IEEE Fellow, won the highest honor of the conference, the IEEE Robotics and Automation Award. At the award ceremony, Khatib's first words were, "I finally got this award in my hands," which triggered a good-natured laugh at the scene.
The award is in recognition of Professor Khatib's important contributions to the development of robotic control and human-centered humanoid robots, and also recognizes his leadership role in the robotics academic community.
Professor Khatib has decades of research experience in robot control and planning, and his academic achievements have profoundly changed the theoretical foundations of many fields such as control, interaction, and positioning.
Last year, Professor Khatib led his team to develop the "Ocean One" underwater robot, which uses a two-handed tactile feedback system to successfully salvage antiques from a sunken ship. Leifeng.com has previously covered and reported on the technical details of "Ocean One". If you want to learn more about Professor Khatib's academic achievements, you may wish to come to our CCF-GAIR conference this year and listen to his insights in person.
Vijay Kumar:IEEE RAS George Saridis Leadership Award
The IEEE RAS George Saridis Leadership Award (Robotics and Automation) was established to recognize outstanding contributions to the advancement of robotics and automation in national and international projects. Vijay Kumar, a member of the National Academy of Engineering and Dean of the School of Engineering at the University of Pennsylvania, received this year's honor.
Vijay Kumar's main research direction is the control and collaboration of multi-robot formations, and he is also known as the drone god.
By the way, Professor Kumar is also an old friend of Leifeng.com (Official Account: Leifeng.com). At last year's CCF-GAIR conference, Professor Kumar gave a speech on the five major trends of drones, pointing out that drones will develop towards the trends of Small, Safe, Smart, Speed and Swarm. With this wonderful speech, Professor Kumar won the Best Speaker of the 2016 CCF-GAIR conference.
What new developments about drones will Kumar bring to the CCF-GAIR conference this year? If you want to listen to Kumar's speech on site, you are welcome to buy a limited-time 40% discount ticket and come to this year's CCF-GAIR conference!
In addition to the two awards mentioned above, ICRA also presented a series of awards, including:
IEEE Kiyo Tomiyasu Award
This award is mainly given to scholars who have made great research achievements in planning, control and autonomous driving operation algorithms. The 2017 IEEE Kiyo Tomiyasu Award was won by Emilio Frazzoli, professor at Swiss Federal Institute of Technology in Zurich, IEEE Fellow, and chief scientist of nuTonomy.
IEEE RAS Pioneer Award
As the name suggests, the Pioneer Award is given to scholars who have made groundbreaking contributions to emerging fields such as biorobotics, biology and medical robotics. It was won by Paolo Dario, professor of biorobotics at the Scuola Superiore Sant'Anna in Pisa, Italy.
RAS Distinguished Service Award
Professor Nancy M. Amato of Texas A&M University received this award. She served as PC Chair of ICRA 2015 and was also the editorial board chair of IROS CPRB (2011-2013). This award is mainly to recognize Professor Amato's leadership role in the RAS Electronic Engineering Products and Services Committee. She also made outstanding contributions at ICRA and IROS conferences.
2017 Early Career Award in Robotics & Automation Academic
The winner is Conor Walsh of Harvard John A. Paulson, in recognition of his contributions to soft robotics and rehabilitative wearable device technology.
Another winner is Sertac Karman, an assistant professor at MIT, who has impressive academic achievements in motion planning and control algorithms.
Inaba Technical Award for Innovation Leading to Production
The award honors the three co-founders of HiBot, Paulo Debenest, Michele Guarnieri and Shiego Hirose.
