Why does Intel have 15,000 software engineers?

There is an IT company that has 15,000 software engineers around the world. It is not a traditional software company, nor is it an Internet giant like Google or Alibaba. On the contrary, traditional software companies and Internet giants are its customers and partners. This company is Intel.

Why does Intel have so many programmers and programmer girls? This has to start with the digital transformation of the entire world.

The Internet cannot be digitized without cloud computing

As the COVID-19 pandemic continues to develop, the world is accelerating its digital transformation. The business scale of digital-related Internet and cloud computing companies is also growing. According to industry consensus, these businesses can be divided into four major categories. Let's take a look at their development:

1

Digital retail , or e-commerce, is expected to reach $4.9 trillion by 2021 [1] . This is equivalent to one-third of China’s GDP in 2019.

2

Digital advertising , as digitization allows for more precise marketing and tracking, is expected to reach $420 billion worldwide by 2021.

3

Digital media , including various multimedia and streaming applications such as video, audio, and games, has a market size of US$120 billion in 2021.

4

Cloud computing services , which are the first three categories of infrastructure, are expected to reach $300 billion in 2021.

However, one thing that the above figures do not explain is that companies using cloud computing already account for more than half of the world's total computing capacity.

Cloud computing has become an important driver of global digital transformation and an irreversible trend. Therefore, serving cloud computing service providers well is contributing to the development of the global digital economy - Intel has always been aware of this and continues to practice it.

Serving cloud service providers is our responsibility

The biggest challenge that cloud service providers need to face is: they must continuously optimize the cost of service delivery while facing ever-changing customer demands and keeping service level agreements stable and flexible.

Among Intel’s customers, cloud service providers can be divided into three categories, and Intel has been helping them successfully pass the above tests.

The first category is large vendors that provide IaaS public cloud services. They provide massive infrastructure and hope to improve the performance of each virtual machine while reducing the overall TCO and achieving a balance between the two. For them, Intel continues to improve the performance of its basic product line while providing security isolation technology. For such customers, Intel will have customized services, including customized Xeon server processors, and provide corresponding integration capabilities.

The second category is companies that deliver a single type of SaaS service, including business software giants SAP and Salesforce, as well as many domestic Internet companies. They focus on: getting the best performance in specific application scenarios. Intel works with these Internet companies to optimize application performance. Taking typical AI technology as an example, many AI algorithms and frameworks of domestic Internet companies are using Intel processors. Intel cooperates with them to polish and optimize the computing framework bit by bit, greatly improving performance. In addition to CPUs, Intel also provides a rich product portfolio from cloud to end to support customers to continue to explore business innovation in the field of edge computing.

The third category is comprehensive SaaS companies, of which Baidu is a typical example. Such companies are large in scale and have complex application scenarios. They have both large-scale internal application scenarios and provide external cloud computing services. For this category, Intel provides a complete product portfolio, and has invested considerable software support in software and overall system optimization. Many of the 15,000 software engineers mentioned at the beginning are engaged in this field.

Openness + Ecosystem, Building the Future of the Internet

Looking back at the history of the Internet, we can say that without Linux, there would be no Internet today. As the most important open source software, Linux is the operating system for countless Internet infrastructures and symbolizes the open spirit of the Internet. As an open source software, the development of Linux relies on the contributions of countless companies, organizations, and individuals around the world, especially its core - kernel - code, which directly determines whether the various Internet services we use every day are stable, reliable, and efficient.

Many of Intel's 15,000 engineers have participated in the development of the Linux kernel. To date, Intel ranks first in the list of contributions to Linux core code. In addition, it has developed and optimized many libraries, tools, and development kits, including Ceph, Redis, and RadonDB databases in the storage category.

Specifically at the cloud computing level, from the data center operating system OpenStack, to the virtualization and container resource scheduling, management-level KVM and Kata Container, to the open source virtual machine monitoring project Cloud Hypervisor, Intel has been working hard to selflessly give back its accumulated experience to the open source community.

Of course, Intel's open source contributions in AI-related fields are already well known, including the optimization of mainstream frameworks such as TensorFlow, and the OpenVINO visual development toolkit, which have become the daily toolbox of development teams of many Internet companies.

In general, as part of the thriving digital economy, Intel is well aware that serving cloud computing and other Internet companies is driving the development of the Internet. Therefore, Intel has always been committed to the following three points:

First , what Intel values is how to use the CPU, together with ecosystem partners and customers, to build the best products to meet the needs of different business scenarios.

Second , Intel has created a complete system of software and hardware products, including computing, storage, and networking, covering the monitoring, management, and maintenance of data centers, in order to build a complete cloud computing data center solution.

Third , building an ecosystem is Intel's unswerving goal. In addition to technical cooperation, Intel has also invested heavily in helping customers and partners promote their markets and brands, helping everyone build a better business model. For example, the Cloud Insider program, which provides specific information and content for the cloud service ecosystem, is a good example.

So, why does Intel need 15,000 programmers and programmer girls? Do you know the answer now?
