“We are very pleased to cooperate with Cadence . Cadence’s strong team assistance and comprehensive technical support have helped us develop sufficiently safe and reliable products in a shorter time. In the future, I believe that we will strengthen our relationship with each other, bring innovation to the racing industry, and make more impossible things possible for Chinese racing.”

—— Wen Famo, Chief Engineer of Excelle Motorcycles

In 1894, the British Hildebrand & Wolfmüller built the first motorcycle, marking the beginning of a new era. Later, in the early 20th century, as motorcycle manufacturing technology improved, some manufacturers began to develop more powerful engines and more stable frame designs, making motorcycles gradually become a symbol of speed and power. As time goes by, this pursuit of speed and power has not stopped. In today's era, with the blessing of technology, motorcycles have a fresh vitality in speed and extreme experience, diving, climbing, soaring or chasing... Motorcycle races are performing spectacular scenes of "speed and passion" every year.

In this context, high-performance racing cars and international events often remind people of the fierce competition of overseas brands. However, domestic brands rarely appear in this field. Until the appearance of Excelle motorcycles, this perception was broken. On January 15, 2023, Excelle participated in the Dakar event and finished successfully. This is the first time in the history of the Dakar Rally that a Chinese driver has participated in a world-class event driving a fully independently manufactured Chinese racing car. In the 45-year history of Dakar, a Chinese-made motorcycle finally participated and finished the race. This is Excelle's achievement and the realization of the long-cherished wish of Chinese motorcycle enthusiasts.

Racing car performance and R&D are inseparable. Excelle has been actively introducing advanced technologies and focusing on the development of high-performance products. As a partner, the Cadence CFD team provided strong support to Excelle. At the beginning, Excelle shared a real car geometry with the Cadence CFD team, and the Cadence CFD team immediately provided a complete CFD Benchmark, which achieved very good results. In particular, Excelle was deeply impressed by the automation and efficiency of the Fidelity tool pre-processing.

Every race in the racing field is a race against time, and the driving resistance of the car is a major factor that restricts the speed. In order to reduce the resistance, any company will invest a lot of money and energy in technology research and development, and Excelle is no exception. CFD is one of the most important technical means of Excelle's "drag reduction".

The whole structure of a motorcycle is very complex, and the geometric structure that CFD engineers have to deal with usually contains tens of thousands of faces. The biggest difficulty that Excelle faced at the time was how to seal the car into a solid and perform meshing, especially the geometric seal. In the past, the whole vehicle geometric seal was completed manually by engineers, and even for skilled engineers, this process took half a month. Then the surface mesh and volume mesh were generated in turn. The efficiency of the whole process was very low, which seriously affected the product development cycle.

Cadence Fidelity CFD can handle any dirty surface geometry, fully automatically seals the geometry, mesh generation does not require absolutely watertight geometry, and V2S mesh generation technology from volume to surface has greatly attracted Excelle's interest. After introducing Cadence Fidelity CFD software, with the help of fully automatic sealing technology AutoSeal and extremely fast mesh generation technology, Excelle reduced the pre-processing time from half a month to one working day, and the whole process was automated. With the help of Cadence Fidelity CFD, Excelle's aerodynamics can reach the same level as the world's advanced racing cars.

Now, Cadence CFD tools have become an indispensable part of Excelle's daily CFD analysis. Fidelity CFD tools have greatly reduced Excelle's labor costs, shortened product launch time, and improved Excelle's competitiveness in the entire market. Through the application of these technologies, Excelle motorcycles have not only demonstrated the strength of Chinese manufacturing in the international arena, but also set a new milestone for the development of the domestic motorcycle industry.

About Fidelity CFD Tools

Fidelity CFD's unified workflow eliminates data transfer between tools, allowing us to obtain more accurate forecast results at a faster solution speed. Cadence Fidelity CFD is a commercial CFD software platform that also has high-order numerical formats, scale-resolved turbulence models, and GPU/CPU acceleration.

Solve the problem of computational fluid dynamics

Several challenging requirements:

  • Accurately and reliably predict the separation of turbulent flows. Existing methods with higher accuracy are too time-consuming, usually taking a week or more, which cannot meet the market demand for ever-shortening product development cycles; while faster methods are less accurate.

  • Further reduce ground testing (wind tunnel) or flight testing.

  • Improved solver robustness and automation support multidisciplinary simulation, allowing multiple physics simulations to be performed simultaneously on the same geometry.

  • The mesh generation process requires almost no user involvement. Existing mesh generators on the market have very limited automation, and manual processing accounts for almost 80% of engineering time. The Fidlity CFD mesh generation module can reduce this time from days to hours.

  • It can run efficiently in parallel on both existing and new generation GPU-based high performance computing (HPC) platforms.
