ROHM has developed the BD71815GW, a highly efficient power management IC (PMIC) ideally suited for the i.MX 7Solo/7Dual application processor series from NXP Semiconductors (NXP).

The "i.MX 7Solo/7Dual" processors are products targeting the market for battery-driven application platforms that value low power consumption, such as e-books, wearable devices, portable terminals for industrial equipment, and tablet computers.


The BD71815GW utilizes ROHM’s power technology advantages in the field of mobile applications accumulated over the years, optimizes the circuit structure for the i.MX 7Solo/7Dual processors, greatly reduces the power consumption in the standby state/working state, thereby significantly extending the battery driving time.

Geoff Lees, General Manager and Senior Vice President of NXP's Microcontroller Division, said, "The combination of the i.MX application processor series (i.MX 6UL, i.MX 6SL, i.MX 7S, i.MX 7D) and ROHM's PMICs will further strengthen our system solutions and support a wider range of applications in areas where low power consumption, small size and low cost are important."

Samples of this product were sold in March 2016 (600 yen/piece, excluding tax), and mass production began in April of the same year at a scale of 400,000 units per month. The production base for the early stages is ROHM Hamamatsu Co., Ltd. (Hamamatsu City, Japan), and the production base for the later stages is ROHM Apollo Co., Ltd. (Fukuoka Prefecture, Japan).

In the field of many mobile devices such as e-books, wearable devices, portable terminals for industrial equipment, and tablets, extending battery driving time is a popular demand, and reducing the power consumption of individual components is a top priority. NXP's "i.MX series" products have an impressive track record in such mobile devices. In addition, the new series of i.MX 7 processors are GHz-class application processors equipped with ARM® Cortex®-A7 and Cortex-M4 cores, which are known for their industry-leading power efficiency, and have achieved processor core efficiency levels of 100μW/MHz and 70μW/MHz, respectively.

New Product Details
The BD71815GW uses ROHM's analog design expertise to achieve an optimal power system for driving the i.MX 7Solo/7Dual processors. It not only maintains the same high power conversion efficiency (over 82%) as previous products, but also successfully reduces the current consumption during standby, which is the key to reducing power consumption in applications, by 16%※1.

In addition, this product has a built-in Li-ion battery charger with 30V input overvoltage protection (OVP) function and LED driver (6 lights). By increasing the switching frequency (6MHz), the external coil is miniaturized; by optimizing the installed functions and adopting the WL-CSP small package (16mm2: 75% less area than previous products), the installation area including external components is greatly reduced.

In addition, this product has a built-in coulomb counter and uses reference software equipped with ROHM's unique algorithm to achieve high-precision battery remaining power monitoring.

This product greatly contributes to achieving "low power consumption", "small size" and "high precision" required for mobile devices.

New Product Features

1. Optimize the Power-rail of i.MX 7Solo/7Dual products and use a high-efficiency step-down converter to further reduce power consumption!

The power supply circuit is compatible with the Power-rail of the i.MX 7Solo/7Dual processors, not only the power consumption is lower during sleep, but the current during standby is also successfully reduced to 10μA.


In addition, the Seamless Switching Mode Control (SSMC) function that smoothly switches between PFM (Pulse Frequency Modulation) mode and PWM (Pulse Width Modulation) mode according to the load current stably achieves high efficiency of more than 82% in all load ranges, making it an optimal power supply system for battery-driven applications.

2. Through a variety of miniaturization technology advantages, the installation area including external components is greatly reduced



1) WLCSP package
The 4mm×4mm square (16mm2) WLCSP package is adopted. Compared with the conventional product (8mm×8mm=64mm2), the mounting area is reduced by 75%.
2) Built-in multiple external functions
It has a built-in 500mA charging function for lithium-ion/lithium-polymer batteries commonly used as power sources for portable devices (added MOSFET, expanded to 2A, with 30V withstand voltage overvoltage protection function), and also has a built-in backlight LED driver (6 lights in 1 row).
3) Increase the switching frequency and make the external coil smaller
The buck converter switching frequency was increased from the conventional 2.5MHz to 6MHz, which enabled the external coil to be miniaturized and the mounting area to be reduced by 25% compared to conventional products.

3. High-precision battery remaining capacity monitoring is achieved through functional integration and ROHM's unique software

By integrating the power supply circuit, battery charger and coulomb meter that match the power rail required by the processor, the remaining battery power can be detected according to the system and battery status. In addition, the reference software equipped with ROHM's unique algorithm minimizes the detection error. As a result, high-precision battery remaining power monitoring can be achieved.
