Have you ever thought about how many sensors you might come across in a day?
How can ams sensor technology enable a better lifestyle?
Pierre Laboisse, Executive Vice President of Global Sales and Marketing at ams Semiconductor, takes us through a day in sensor life to understand: from getting up in the morning to exercise to turning off the lights at night, an average of 200 sensors are working silently around us to make our lives better.
How are the 200 sensors divided into different tasks?
Did you know that from the moment you get up in the morning and drink your first cup of coffee, you are probably already using an application based on ams sensors. ams estimates that every day, you come into contact with approximately 200 sensors while using your devices, driving your car or working. Sensors collect data and then use this data to initiate actions. Let’s take a look at modern applications of ams sensors and some future scenarios that depict a better life.
#1 Start with the mobile or portable device that is closest to you
Mobile phones have become indispensable. From 3D sensing, spectral sensing to innovative Behind-the-OLED (BOLED) light sensing, the world’s leading smartphone OEMs are already using ams sensor technology. 3D sensing technologies such as Time-of-Flight (ToF) measure the precise distance between the phone and an object and can be used to enhance AR, video and camera applications. ams’ 3D facial recognition expertise makes it easy for customers to bring fast and convenient user identification and authentication features to their smartphones, including secure payment authorization. Our BOLED light sensors enable OEMs to produce smaller, bezel-less phones, while our Spectral sensors improve the camera capabilities of mobile devices.
When you work while listening to music, you can use ams’ ANC (Active Noise Cancellation) and Augmented Hearing technologies , which are already used in earbuds and headphones around the world.
In short, ams technology helps enhance mobile lifestyles, with many of these enhancements also found in tablets, computers and wireless headsets.
#2 Achieve an easy and safe driving experience
On your way to work, you probably use ams sensor and lighting technology . When you remotely unlock your car, a bright and clear light pattern is projected on the ground to welcome you. While driving, precise position sensors deployed in the steering wheel and active damping system help to achieve an easy and safe driving experience, even on bumpy roads.
Optical sensing technology recognizes your gestures and allows you to interact directly with the car's infotainment system without distraction. In the near future, this technology will bring you more than just convenience. It will also be able to detect the presence of living beings and objects in different seats in the car to ensure that the vehicle safety system can respond in the best way for all occupants, including children and pets.
Front optical sensing systems
, which every car needs to have to pass the highest Euro NCAP safety rating, will benefit from key building blocks from ams. If cars can warn drivers who are falling asleep or changing their visual focus while driving, fatal accidents due to driver drowsiness and distraction could be significantly reduced.
In the near future, your highway navigation will be significantly enhanced as you drive down the highway thanks to rugged and reliable solid-state LiDAR sensors that utilize laser sources developed using ams’ proprietary VSCEL technology . In the future, this technology will also help enable fully autonomous vehicles.
If you activate the automatic parking feature, ams technology is also involved, as it uses distance information from short-range LiDAR and ams 1D ToF so that your car can accurately maneuver into even the tightest parking space.
#3 3D technology ensures office or residential access security
ams 3D sensing technology can also be used in many other applications, such as: residential or (with time-keeping) office access security applications . We are currently evaluating 3D recognition technology for electronic door lock systems for home and building automation to achieve keyless access. We believe that this technology is superior to fingerprint access, which often fails when hands are cold or wet. 3D recognition is significantly more secure than 2D recognition systems. In addition, access control systems based on 3D sensing technology are suitable for environments where hands are not required, thus helping to reduce the spread of germs, which is crucial in today's world.
#4 Industrial field: Proximity sensors support more complex and accurate human-machine interaction
As industry continues to become more efficient and automated, whether it is drone delivery or factory robots, sensing technology plays an important role. Industry needs more accurate 1/2/3D proximity sensing technology , which is exactly what ams semiconductors are good at.
Ultimately, humans and robots will work together in highly complex ways, using a large number of sensors simultaneously to enable seamless collaboration between humans and machines. ams sensors can also quickly and accurately scan surrounding areas such as warehouses, containers or trucks to easily measure load volumes .
#5 Healthcare: Please swallow this Naneye camera
Prevention is the best medicine. Biosensors in smartphones, wearables, and other devices that measure vital signs will expand their use in preventive healthcare, leading to better, more independent, and healthier lifestyles.
ams offers the world’s smallest camera module: Naneye , for healthcare, home and industrial applications. ams’ Naneye could eventually enable disposable endoscopes in the form of swallowable capsules.
As a global leader in imaging technology, ams imaging sensors are used in high-performance computed tomography (CT) or digital X-ray equipment, which can be used for preventive or emergency scans.
#6 Easy and secure payment
Over time, new sensor use cases will become more embedded in every aspect of life, such as 3D facial recognition authentication for a password-free secure payment experience at a grocery store .
ams sensor technology
Make the impossible possible
"Use your imagination" is a core value of ams. While our sensor technology makes the impossible possible, our global engineers, sales teams and customers are also "using their imagination" to innovate to improve our daily lives. ams will continue to discover new business models and technologies to create value for our customers, while providing users with a better lifestyle through the core sensing ecosystem.
