On August 19, poor signal has always been a long-standing pain for iPhone users. In order to solve this problem, Apple began to independently develop baseband chips in 2019 to replace the Qualcomm chips currently used in the iPhone.
Analyst Ming-Chi Kuo revealed that Apple plans to deploy its self-developed 5G baseband on the iPhone SE 4 first. If successful, it will be subsequently applied to the iPhone released in 2025 or 2026.
In the latest episode of Power On, industry insider Mark Gurman said that the 5G modem that Apple has spent billions of dollars to develop is unlikely to improve Apple's existing devices.
Mark Gurman said that Apple did not gain any benefits from using its own 5G modems in its devices. Qualcomm's solution is better and cannot be matched by most competitors, including Intel.
This means that even if Apple's self-developed solution is adopted, there will be no improvement in the iPhone signal, and the signal problem has nothing to do with Qualcomm.
In Mark Gurman's view, Apple wants to build its own modem. On the one hand, self-developed solutions are more conducive to Apple's publicity. On the other hand, Apple wants to achieve chip unification. Apple hopes that one chip can bring multiple wireless functions including WiFi and Bluetooth.
