As Android photography supports higher dynamic range, the second-generation Snapdragon 8 brings high dynamic photo details through 18-bit ISP
At the 2023 Google I/O conference, Android introduced a new image format for photo shooting-Ultra HDR . This photo format will be supported in Android 14, which can capture photos in the backward-compatible JPEG format while providing more than 8-bit dynamic range, allowing the photos captured by the camera to contain more stunning highlights and dark parts. detail.
Ultra HDR will significantly improve photo quality on top Android terminals, bringing a 10-bit HDR experience to photos taken and shared by users. We are excited to partner with Qualcomm Technologies to leverage Qualcomm’s advanced 18-bit ISP capabilities to bring Ultra HDR support to the Snapdragon mobile platform.

Snapdragon powers Ultra HD photo shooting
Mobile devices have supported 10-bit HDR videos for some time, but among daily photos taken with mobile phones, 10-bit HDR photos are still relatively new. Ultra HDR files contain a standard 8-bit (standard dynamic range, SDR) JPEG compressed base image concatenated with another smaller resolution JPEG image with gain mapping, and metadata for HDR reconstruction .
Ultra HDR images can be decoded through a range of different rendering formats from full SDR to full HDR. The final rendering method is adaptive and depends on the content creator's original intention, display capabilities and display conditions, which can provide users with the best image look and feel. Additionally, the image format is fully backwards compatible with existing applications, so even if the existing application does not recognize the HDR functionality in the file, the image can simply be parsed as an SDR JPEG file.
Qualcomm Technologies' imaging ISP team worked with the Android team to support the Ultra HDR format using Snapdragon's 18-bit ISP. Thanks to this cooperation, Snapdragon becomes one of the first platforms in the world to support Ultra HDR photo shooting, which can present stunning details in the dark and bright parts of the image. In the future, smartphones powered by the Snapdragon mobile platform and Android 14 will support Ultra HDR format photo shooting and more imaging innovations.
Snapdragon mobile platforms have been pioneering smartphone innovation, delivering stunning, professional-quality photo and video shooting experiences. In terms of HDR video shooting:
• Snapdragon 845 uses the first mobile ISP to support 4K HDR video shooting.
• Snapdragon 855 adds support for HDR10+ format.
• Snapdragon 865 uses the world’s first ISP to support Dolby Vision video shooting.
• The first-generation Snapdragon 8 uses the first ISP to support smartphone shooting of 8K HDR video.
Snapdragon is also far ahead in HDR photo shooting. In fact, Snapdragon 888 is the first mobile platform to support 10-bit color depth HEIF format photo shooting, allowing each photo to display more than 1 billion colors. Taking advantage of the powerful 18-bit ISP of the second-generation Snapdragon 8, smartphone users can enhance their photo shooting experience through RAW format. Smartphones will be able to unlock the full potential of photos when users have access to uncompressed and unprocessed 16-bit color depth RAW photos.
