Recently, at the "2023 Songshan Lake China IC Innovation Summit Forum", Liu Zhaojun, chairman of Sitan Technology, introduced the current status of the Micro-LED industry and the products of Sitan Technology.

Display is one of the most important parts of XR applications. On the one hand, the BOM cost is the largest part, and more importantly, the quality of the display effect is directly related to the user experience.

First, let’s introduce the background information of Micro-LED. Micro-LED technology refers to a display technology that uses self-luminous micron-sized LEDs as light-emitting pixel units and assembles them onto a drive panel to form a high-density LED array, that is, LED miniaturization and matrix technology, which refers to on-chip Integrating high-density and micro-sized LED arrays is the result of thinning, miniaturizing and matrixing LEDs. Micro-LED generally requires the chip size to be less than 50μm, and can achieve individual addressing and individual driving of each picture element to emit light. Compared with LCD and OLED in display, Micro-LED has the advantages of self-illumination, high efficiency, low power consumption, high integration, high stability, and all-weather operation. It is considered to be the most promising next-generation new display and light-emitting device. One, this is very suitable for XR’s strict requirements on size, power consumption and so on.

Liu Zhaojun said that Micro-LEDs used in XR do not require Mass Transfer technology. Mass Transfer technology is to transfer LED devices to a specific drive substrate and form an array, but this is often used in Medium and large size screens such as mobile phones and TVs. On small-size devices such as XR, heterogeneous integration technology needs to be used to match the light-emitting matrix and the driver one-to-one. Therefore, the "semiconductor technology content in Micro-LED is extremely high."

Liu Zhaojun mentioned that compared with silicon-based OLED, the main difficulty in Micro-LED is driving. The material properties of OLED are different from those of gallium nitride, and special drive design is required for its luminous efficiency and luminescence curve. In 2006, Liu Zhaojun of the Hong Kong University of Science and Technology successfully invented active-driven Micro-LED display technology. He was the first scholar to obtain a doctorate based on a Micro-LED paper. The paper was cited by Apple and Samsung's original patents on Micro-LED. Therefore, Liu Zhaojun said: "Our data over the years can support our design."

At the beginning of 2019, Stan Technology established the country's first Micro-LED pilot line in Longhua District, Shenzhen. In 2022, it has officially built the first Micro-LED mass production line in Xiamen.
